Hi,
I have just done my first ever HPI check on a car i was hoping to buy tomorrow, its near 20k so thought i best check, its an old ford so i'd like to know everything i can, 19.99 is worth it i would say, anyhoo The only issue the hpi has flagged is a possible mileage issue, shown below is their data.
Date recorded Recorded by Mileage reading Total 03/Mar/1995 Manufacturer 14,300 14,300 03/Apr/1995 Manufacturer 18,100 18,100 26/Jan/1999 DVLA 109,000 109,000 18/Aug/1999 NMR 100,000 100,000 15/Oct/2000 NMR 56,000 56,000 29/Nov/2000 DVLA 30,000 30,000 21/May/2003 Auction 55,000 55,000 07/Mar/2011 NMR 76,000 76,000
The car is sat on 86k now and is 21 years old so doesnt sound correct as is (but a lot do have that sort of mileage) The DVLA mot history starts from 2005 and it rises from 67k gradually and seems ok, i am aware there is not a great deal of history with the car, could this be why?
Is this common? Would you not buy the car? Please advise, like i say its my first time so all new to me, i often check dvla mot history when buying (usually after lol)
Thanks in advance for any replies, any info appreciated

I'd use the hpi as a bargaining tool.
Buy the car on overall condition. Rust is a lot more expensive than fitting a re con engine or box.

Thanks for the replies thus far, i find it a bit odd that someone would do 90,000 miles in four years, i find that quite substantial in a what was a new escort cosworth at the time Thanks pauly22 that is something i could use in my favour we have agreed a price but he may take a hit when i bring that up surely anyone who was to buy it would check the same as i have... Bodywork yes i am going over every centimetre of the car before i commit i am not obliged to buy i have the second chance offer joem83 below is the plate data from the hpi Plate Transfer The current plate was transferred to this vehicle on 21/04/2009 K###s was applied to this vehicle on 01/03/2005 There are no interests recorded against K###S L####L was applied to this vehicle on 01/07/1994 There are no interests recorded against L####L It is back on its original plate now and only has had one plate in its life so has a total of two changes

Contact Northumbria Police? See if they can shed any light on the mileage when they sold it.

Contact Northumbria Police? See if they can shed any light on the mileage when they sold it. Good shout, worth a call i will see if there is a non emergency contact number for them, i doubt though that their data will go that far back, and if it did i don't think they would give me it - I'm not sure the current owner knows at all

It's a famous cossie. If I remember correctly this was in max power. By the list of mileages its been clocked a couple of times but if the price reflects this then it's well worth it. Something that is worth checking is the suspension components. If they have had poly bushes fitted as they will probably have worn out and the shocks etc. if it has and the other bits are quality replacements then it's been looked after by someone who loved it. Mileage isn't everything trust me. I have seen two guys I know both drive Astra vans for the same company.both new at the same time. One has 200000 on his and it's a nice van still at five years old the other guy thrashed his into the ground and never serviced it blew the engine after less than a year with 40k on. Since then the company has had to introduce fixed service schedules because of one idiot who didn't think the spanner on the dash meant anything.

Thanks joem83 i wouldnt of thought of that - i will drop them a message in the morning and see what if anything they can tell me. spandelly you are correct, mileage isnt everything, the car looks clean enough just now so i will go over it with a fine tooth comb tomorrow then do it again, it does look awfully low at the moment I have attached a picture of the engine bay as it is now, its got a t34 turbo on the later engine. I don't think it looked like this back in the northumbria police days...

With this kind of car always go off condition rather than mileage - but use the fact that it's done 186k and the HPI check as negotiation of course.
If it looks right don't let the miles put you off - but to state the obvious, check carefully, replacement engines for those aren't cheap!
It will have been hammered by Plod - but it will also have been very thoroughly maintained.

The rossers change clocks for a hobby! If it comes up with more than a tiny inaccuracy on test, out it goes. But mechanical condition is the least of your worries, especially since the drivetrain has been almost completely replaced with upgraded kit in later life (the polis never do anything like that) Definitely conduct a millimetre search of the shell for damage and signs of repair, policemen are not the most cautious drivers and nearly all police cars are damaged at some point in their careers. The repairs will have been done to a VERY high standard but still.........

Even has it's own diecast! hahaha crazy. i am totally unsure as to what to do now. Clearly it needs to go back into police livery to match the model. Present owner may want to increase the price if he realises it's famous..... Otherwise I'm with the others - buy on current condition. Nick

Don't tell him why the mileage is off, just use it to try and knock a bit off.
Get it home, sticker it up, enjoy, sell it for plenty at a later date!
