Had a bloke come over to where I used to work & asked us to MOT a Herald & MK1 Cortina 1500 de-lux that had sat on his drive for years. MOT'd both of them & they needed about £250 of work, asked him how much he wanted for the Cortina & he said, pay my bill & you can have it. Even brought me a good pair of wings over too!

I bought a very early 1970 Hillman Avenger 1250 off a mate back in the mid 80s. I ran it for two months then weighed it in for £25. It was, without any doubt, the most fantastically rotten car (structurally) I have ever owned and the worst handling. She went well tho, Rootes really knew how to get a small engine to perform well. Actually, how they never outsold Escorts will remain a mystery, way better cars IMHO.

I had a Mk2 golf 1.6 GL or whatever the base poverty trim level was. Got it for £260. Ran it for 6 or so months until the rust took what was left of the sills and scrapped it for £100 the day before the MOT ran out. Weber carb sold for £100, lights, front bumper and wheels sold too and made about £30 profit. Result!

Had a few freebies but the best running car I've ever had is this. UK's Coolest Banger by srblythe, on Flickr Bought for £100 with a bit of mot and tax it has been utterly reliable and one of the best driving cars I currently own, It's just been abused and neglected yet it still keeps going. I also bought this recently for £200. DSC_5003 by srblythe, on Flickr DSC_4718 by srblythe, on Flickr Utterly reliable and returns decent mpg, another bargain buy. I bought this for £250 DSC_5050 by srblythe, on Flickr It's rough but it's a useful vehicle to have, lugging engines in the back or towing a car trailer is no problem for this beast. I bought this for £100, sailed an mot then swapped it for a bedford Rascal pickup and single axle car trailer... DSC_3258 by srblythe, on Flickr Good quality cheap cars are out there if you're willing to take a chance on them.

Volvo 480es £80 :-) was a few years back though. I loved it when you could pick up 480s cheap The front one was bought with a full MOT for £107, the one behind was free. Ran the G reg for a year and broke it when the MOT ran out. Broke the one behind after failing to sell it. I also had a J reg one for £175, and a J reg turbo for £170 that had just had two new tyres and had 3/4 tank of petrol. This Manta was a freebie, with a fair MOT and a couple of days tax.

A lot of the cheap prices posted here are the average price I pay for cars, think I've only ever spent over £400 on about 3 cars and I've probably owned close to 40. Cheapest one I've ever bought was a triumph acclaim for £5 (no pics as it was long before we all had camera phones). Freebie polo coupe Another freebie polo (minus wheels and hydraulics )

Back in 1988, I bought a Mk1 Escort 1100L off a mate for £50 with 3 months tax and 10 months MOT. The very next day, I drove into my local petrol station, put £10 in the tank and when I came out, a guy was looking round it and offered me £100 on the spot! I told him I'd just put £10 in the tank so he gave me £110 and a lift home!
I was dead chuffed at doubling my money! That evening, I bought 2 cars with the money, an Austin 1100 which I made into a mini Lead-Sled with scallops and fender skirts (God I loved that car) and also a 1750 Maxi with T&T which was used daily by my whole family as at the time, we worked down an unmade road which my brother in laws dorchester limo was too clean to take, and my sled was too lowwww.

Renault 19 16v - £70. Cr*p listing on eBay with zero pics, just said it had been sitting a while. Won it for £70. Went up there, put a battery on it and drove it home. Apparently it had loads of engine work done and it indeed absolutely flew. Unfortunately a short time later it refused to start and we couldn't find the problem, so I took the leather interior out and put it in my other 19 16v and scrapped it. Escort Si - £100. Broke down on the way home in a cloud of steam and I thought 'ah well, was only £100'. But got it back home, replaced the knackered water pump and ran it for 3 years with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Only an electrical issue killed it in the end, was on 167k miles when the scrap man came and collected it Got over £100 back for scrapping it too. Escort Ghia Si - £Free. Knackered head gasket. Gave it to my brother (a mechanic) as he needed a car, he replaced the head gasket and ran it for a couple of years. Escorts x2 (I've had a fair few Escorts! - £200. Sold one for £200 and the other one the engine was toast so sold it as spares or repair on eBay for £150. BWM 518 - £Free. Drove it home, put it through an MOT, needed 100 quids worth of work. Sold it the next week for £500. Saw it running around the area for years after. I could literally go on all day!

Cheap or free cars were everywhere in the 90's back when you had to actually pay someone to take your scrap car away! The way scrap prices are falling at the min I can see those times comming back in the near future. Cheapest one I've had recently was this fiesta I bought from a guy at work, it was for sale on here but now I've sold it via ebay I can say what I paid for it, loads of mot with no advisories, rust free apart from some very minor bubbling on one rear wheel arch and serviced twice a year from new. Gave £100 and drove it home
