I put this in at the end of March for a full "windows out" respray we knew that there was a few wee bits of metal needing replaced, and I was told job will take 3 - 4 weeks mmm. It's also been treated to new Eibach Pro springs and Bilstein shocks all round + top mounts & bump stops etc and anti roll bar bushes Well - I got it back two weeks ago today (Tuesday) 20 - yes twenty weeks to the day after I put t in ! as was expected with a 24 y/o car, it needed rather a lot of "wee" bits of new metal, once they started stripping it down it became more and more so, here's a couple of taster before - ish and after pics, I will do a full post soon, wheels still to be refurbed, and new Conti boots put on, and the interior needs a good going over as well. The front lip should be colour coded, and not black, this will be done asap. Unfortunately, I've not been able to drive it yet due to smashing my heel almost 12 weeks ago and I am still on crutches and not full weight bearing - but in two weeks (hopefully) I'll be back on my own 2 feet - literally cant wait to get out in it.

I've only driven shed versions, I imagine one as clean and tidy must be a little joy! When does the heel get to the point you can have a go?

That looks pretty damn nice. You have my sympathies as I'm nine weeks into an ankle injury that's pretty much stopped me driving any distance. I said the hell with it last Sunday and abused it for three hours and I'm still smiling (and limping) now from the drive. The wait'll make it all the sweeter!

Oh Yesssss!! It is looking fantastic, glad you decided it was a keeper.
I've done 22 thousand miles in mine this year so far, the engine really is a gem.
Shame about the foot,
looking forward to the write up.

Thanks peeps scotsdave - there are a few for sale out there !
georgeb - you have my sympathy re your ankle - not good, my heel was smashed into 4, 12 weeks today actually It'll be another 2 weeks before I'm full weight bearing, I still have to wear a moonboot while on my feet, and it's too wide to drive with as it hits the clutch and brake pedal - I tried with boot off last weekend to press the clutch and I couldn't get it even half way down, so there is NO way I'm going to push harder risking doing more damage to my heel.
brc - it is great to drive, but its been almost 6 months since I've driven it, I am only the second owner, and its only just turned 91,000 miles . I'm hoping to be back to full use of my foot in about 2 weeks.
jimspolice - Yes they are great cars, they just handle so good, I've just had all the suspension renewed too, so should be even better. Did you have leather interior ?
106e30 - I remember your car, I think we got them around same time, and you had your resprayed as well, if I remember yours already had quite a high mileage. You've done 22,000 miles this year ? wow - where do you go ?? I got mine in July last year and I've only did about 2,000 miles , but I cant really use my cars for work as I work in Edinburgh city centre and there is NO parking - well free parking that is, so my cars are purely for pleasure. You may remember I have an XJS as well, and, as that's an auto, I've been able to drive it during my injury, but not really very much as I cant do anything, and normally when you go somewhere, its to do something ! so only use it to visit my parents / visiting peeps. It'll probably be a few weeks before I do a write up, as I want to give it a clean and wax, which I think I'll be able to wax it in 2 weeks, as I asked the body & paint guy how long to wait before I can wax it, and he said 4 weeks, which will be up by the time I lose the boot & crutches, the interior needs a good clean as its quite dusty due to being in the shop for over 5 months + it has that body shop smell in it. so I'll keep ya'll updated.

Mine was the checked cloth. I did the m20 flywheel swap, fitted a decent Jetex exhaust system, a super chip adjustable roll bars and an e36 steering rack. Such a fun car. Really is a classic now. Look after it and in a few years it'll be worth a decent amount.

Yes they a real classic now, even "cooking spec" 316i 's are fetching good money, whats the M20 flywheel swap ? is that a lightened flywheel ? I think the E46 or Z4 steering racks are quicker, these are things I shall maybe do in time, I've still got the wheels to get refurbed, by which time I'll have spent well over £3k on it, which includes major - all oils / fluids service and new discs & pads up front and new breather hoses, and so on never thought I'd be spending anywhere near this when I first bought it

The m20 flywheel is essentially a cheap way of lightening the flywheel. I had a bit of meat machined off the m20 flywheel at the same time. You need a 325 or 320 starter so the cog matches the ring gear.
When I had mine e46 and z4 racks were expensive so I went for an e36 rack which was a big improvement. I can't remember the code now, but there is one from an e46 compact which is really quick, I put one on my e36 drifcar.

That looks fantastic. I know how frustrating it can be not being able to drive a manual as I've a dodgy lower back and left leg. Using a clutch can be a real pain, literally. I always have to keep at least one auto about me. Makes life easier. Hope you get better soon. Nothing more frustrating than having a nice car in the garage and you can't get to drive it.

I had my steering changed to an e36 rack a couple of months ago, It's only a 0.25 of a turn quicker, but it feels much better weighted and there is definitely better feedback coming through the wheel, My only issue with it so far is that the power steering fluid needs topping up twice a year.

Wow only just seen this in "that blue e21" thread. Congrats! Looks great. Can recommend purple tag rack conversion, huge difference! Feels much more natural on twisty B roads. Also short shift was another £20 well spent IMO Mine.

Also short shift was another £20 well spent IMO Mine. That is one beautiful looking IS. As a result of seeing yours hillbilly and The Chef's I've decided mine is going back to standard. I'll keep the E36 steering rack though. Any ideas where i could track down a front Lip, mine was in the boot when I picked up the car and heavily damaged.

^^^^^^ couldn't agree more, I believe the e30 can be improved in many ways mechanically but that doesn't mean you have to lose the charm and classic look of an original, especially an "is"

Haha, most of them are on H plate also! I bought mine standard two years ago, not standard now and massively improved in my eyes. But I've retained every standard item so it can be returned to original as its all bolt on stuff. I will get a thread link for ya
