Hi mate Guess these are for the front? Assuming that: What are you using it for, road or track? If road I'd suggest something around 145 to 160lbs. For track probably 180 to 200lbs. Length depends how low you want to run it. If say a 2-3inch drop verses standard then I think something around a 9 inch spring will be in the right ball park given the adjustability in the coilover. Hope that helps

I received my spring coilover springs a few days ago, went for really short ones that are relatively stiff - interested to see how they compare to the current setup

I've 185lb -2" on 175/13/50 tyres and standard legs. For road use the set up is harder than a hookers heart, I wish I'd gone for 145lb springs.

My (non-coilover) capri has 145lb -2" front. Would be interested to see how this compares, will you be posting some pics of the installation and end result?

Spring rates for coilovers and non-coilovers are fairly different, to achieve a similar feeling firmness.

Spring rates for coilovers and non-coilovers are fairly different, to achieve a similar feeling firmness. Are you talking about changing to coilovers from a non coil over damper setup where the reactionary force of the spring and damper are offset in some way? For example a FWD hatch beam axle where the spring axis is often a fair distance from the damper axis. That would certrainly have the effect you mention. In the case of the Capri, it uses Macpherson struts at the front - these are already coil overs, and as such the spring and damper have the same axis. In this case, assuming the same dampers, wheel rates, bush rates etc. a linaer 145lb 1.9" 'coilover' spring will give exactly the same reactionary force as a standard diameter linear spring of 145lb rate. Or are you talking about the different between linear and progressive springs? Most OEM car springs have a progressive spring rate whereas most 1.9" coilovers have a linear rate (progressive the rate increases with compression, linear the rate will remain the same regardless of compression) this means they will feel quite different at higher compression's even if the quoted rate is the same. Basically a progressive spring will effectively have a much higher rate at higher compressions than a standard linear 1.9" coiloiver spring even if the quoted rates are the same. This is why the rates people use for coilover cars are often higher than the OEM quoted rate, a linear spring has to be to give the same effective rate under normal driving/compression in order to maintain similar ride & handling. You can get progressive 1.9" coilover springs, and these are a good idea on road car or lightweight track cars as you can run a low rate for small compression, meaning the car isn't too bumpy. You also see people using a pair of springs on a coilover to achieve a 2 stage (semi-progressive) spring rate for this reason. I'll get off my soapbox and stop waffling on now ;D
