UPDATE! Not alot in terms of work done physically lately, I will upload what I have done but I have finally came to a decision on the Starlet's power. Plan A was (what I really want) Honda S2000 power. 240bhp Plan B was mx5 1.8 with eventual supercharger. 140 then 220bhp? Plan B is much more realistic and cost efficient and means I may actually have a working car, next year rather than saving up for ages and ages. Maybe I'll have S2k power in years to come, but for now I just wanna drive the thing. It'll probably still be pretty bloody quick. So I'm going to pick up an engine and all the bits I need next weekend and concentrate on making the car light as fook! Excited! Here's some pics of what I have done lately

Warning!! PIC HEAVY. Here's a surge of photos which show what I've been up to/buying lately! NEW fibreglass bumpers! Mx5 mk1 1.8 engine, gearbox, engine loom, clocks, pedal box THE LOT bought.. Only slotted into place, don't get too excited! Mx5 pedal box is a near fit as it is! Car totally stripped of wiring loom, dash etc. Oh.. and me and the missus bought a mk2 golf! Gave the floor some red oxide and seam sealing And did the last bit of welding on the floor Cleaned up and all seam sealered ready for another coat of primer.. And just last night I've done the upper rear panel! Seam welded too for some extra strength. Really happy with my progress this week, hopefully get some more nailed over the weekend!

Good work man! Nice choice of second/third (the Volvo?) car but I may be biased. Golf has a seven slat and beige interior, a type 19 going by the plate... god I want it! I'm not a fan of the gti stuff in mine.

This should be awesome once done! I can't help but think itd be better with the engine on a set of itbs, but i think thats just my love of old rwd N/A barking starlets and escorts haha!
Supercharged would be pretty cool too, but turbo may prove easier to fit up as with the S/C you may have trouble getting the pulleys bang on, even with the kits sold at my work if they aren't fitted spot on they will chew belts like you wouldnt believe

ITBs make everything better! I'm also pretty biased, seeing as I run a set on my MX5. The Starlet is looking great

CHEERS GUYS! The Mk2 is a 4 door type 19 yes well spotted, I'm going to start a build thread on that soon I have lost count on how many cars I've had now. Must be my 10th or 11th, I've kept my Volvo throughout and searched for a Starlet since I was alot younger! haha! I am very much the same in terms of N/A screamers, but it costs alot of money. If I could see figures of power and rev range it may tempt me to go that way. Never been a fan of turbos and I do quite like the wine from a supercharger. What company do you work for? I didn't know stuff was readily available except for america! Any pics of your mx5 engine set up and costs Joey?

I probably have a ton more if you're interested. I have the 1.6 engine - the 1.8 is actually easier for ITBs because the injectors mount into the head rather than the manifold. I took a spare intake manifold, chopped it down and machined it flat. Then went to a motorbike dismantlers and went through a ton of their throttle bodies until I found something that just about lined up - the GSXR 600 / 750 throttle bodies are a popular choice. In the end I took two sets of Triumph TT600 throttle bodies, along with the rubber boots. I made up some flanges out of aluminium and had them welded onto the chopped up manifold: Then it was a case of just bolting everything together and that was the mechanical side done. For management, I bought a MS2 kit from DIYAutoTune in the US and spent a week soldering it together, then a couple of weeks getting it to start. I have a generic IAT from eBay, and I'm using the TPS that was on the throttle bodies. All the tuning I've done myself. I had big plans for it last year, and then spent 9 of the last 12 months working in the US, so it's fallen by the wayside a bit. So I guess cost wise: Intake Manifold - £15 Throttle Bodies - £60 each (I got a spare because they just happened to have two..) Welding - £80 IAT - £6 Megasquirt 2 (https://www.diyautotune.com/product/megasquirt-ii-programmable-efi-system-pcb3-0-kit-w-black-case/) - $279 + tax Throttle cable (generic kit car one) - £10 Then there's the cost of all the wiring, hose clamps, bolts, vac hose etc - probably another £100 or so. Anyway, sorry to derail your thread a bit. If you're willing to do some DIY (and it seems you are!) then it can be pretty reasonable. Plans for mine next - I have a spare 1.6 engine that I'm going to have some head work done on and some HKS cams to go in.

Thats awesome, thanks for the info it's a massive help! What advantages do you seem to have with throttle bodies besides the noise? And what other mods do you have to go with it. Would skimming the head, proper exhaust mani and lightened flywheel be beneficial? The general feel I got from mx5 owners is that there's no point in tuning the engine unless turboing or S/C. Yeah I will be doing things myself unless I become a millionaire! Thanks again dude.

To be honest, you probably don't get much more power than stock. Most of the benefits you see are from the aftermarket ECU and being able to set your own map. However, ITBs definitely make the car more responsive, there's instant response whenever you put your foot down.
Yup, all those mods would be beneficial. I'm planning the head skim and lightened flywheel for the new engine; already got an aftermarket manifold, decat and 2.25" pipe.
You'll never see the big gains you get from FI (at least not for the same cost) but it's a nice way to get a car running on an aftermarket ECU before adding a turbo or supercharger.
