compared to a new car the power steering in both our MG ZR's is quite heavy, everything is working fine - no faults with either of them.
is there way to increase the power assistance? to make steering easier?

There must be a fault with the power steering. With my ZR stationary I can turn the wheels from lock to lock with just the pressure of one finger against the spokes.I have 205/45/17 tyres.

IIRC its a system that runs from the engine which is what gives its that nice feed back at speed un like the muted feel on most modern cars. Not a great deal that can be done with it but I liked the feel of them but I like weighty steering feel.

Some days you just need to take a grinder to an inanimate object, just to make your day a tiny bit better!!

It's a "proper" power steering system with an engine driven pump, not one of the electrical assisted variety.

rev the engine a bit, to get more hydraulic fluid flow. Most modern units are EPAS, so can give 100% assistance, even if the engine's off. The older hydraulic units rely on engine speed to give more "oomph"

Would the ZR have anything as advanced as speed sensitive power assistance? I have distant memories of a Vauxhall Omega with heavy steering, following a new rack and pump the fault was still there. Hydraulic system but with the ability to vary the power assistance according to speed. A new pressure sensor sorted it in then end.
Apart from that there's plenty of moving parts in the steering system that could be tight enough to make the steering heavy; bottom ball joint, strut top mount, track rod end, steering rack, column bearings and UJ's. Wheel alignment can also have an affect on steering weight. I assume tyre pressures are all OK.

You can't really compare it to a new car, try putting a few more psi in the front tyres
