Oil breathers on a turbo diesel

Evening all,

My shogun has a pipe running from the rocker cover to the air intake, between the air filter and the turbo. I had the lot off at the weekend whilst I was changing the alternator and noticed there was a lot of oil in it. I don't know if it's more than there should be, the engine is in particularly good nick for its age so I'm not too worried, but I'd like it if it wasn't there at all!

So my question is can I take the pipe out altogether, vent the rocker cover into the atmosphere and block off the hole in the air intake? Or does my turbo rely on that film of oil for anything?

The crankcase breather will be oily, it takes excess pressure from the crankcase and recycles it for emissions reasons and obviously some of the oil vapour 'condenses' in the system. It's not a problem and I wouldn't worry. You have nothing to gain by blanking it and venting to atmosphere unless you really like the smell of oil vapour in the cabin.

You could get a sealed oil breather catch can with two pipe outlets on it.
Feed the current pipe to it from the rocker cover and the other one back to the air inlet pipe.
The can should catch the main part of crankcase vapours and the gases get ingested by the engine again

Just putting a breather pipe filter on the cam cover will lead to a decent amount of pong in to the cabin

I've done this ^ to our Landy, and it works well. A cheap 2nd hand twin port catch can, a bit of 19mm hose, job done.
