Is this just for "proof of concept" or a permanent thing ? Have you thought about UPVC. I have some SWISH sheeting that is probably 10mm think, can be used the same as timber and a lot lighter than ply.

thats the one chaps not sure to be honest , I'm doing it as apposed to buying an already made splitter for £80 odd also to be a bit different. (mk5 fiesta zs with puma 1.7 engine, so not retro I'm afraid ) got to do your own stuff to stand out these days and all the other mk5's look the same. had a look at upvc stuff, don't know if it'll be upto the job though, was going to get some 10-20mm ply , some metal brackets to fit to the chassis legs and slam panel, then attach it all to the bumper with an airdam. something like this - although the sides wont be as wide on mine! - i just need to find some suitable edging and then i can get started. (sorry about huge picture )

By the time you've added up the wood, brackets, paint, time, etc. and taken into account that it'll look like you've driven over some debris in the road... £80 for a ready made one ain't bad.

i know what you mean mate, but I'm trying not to splash out. plus it'll look better i think I'm taking my time with it to make it as good looking as possible. paid £14 for the wood so far, splitter support bars and rubber edging come to another £16. steel strips will be free, pack of nuts and bolts are £10, then its just time, drilling, measuring and probably a few swears. haha ....all free of course. so far iv got the wood cut and fitted on the bumper - next step is to get some steel strips and fit them to the chassis railsand slam panel then add the support bars and airdam, and then take it off, paint it all up and re-fit then add the rubber edging.

Why? surely if you want to race the car you want something that has been proven to work rather than just bolting on bits of wood?

If it were me Id get the ply to the shape I want, then skin the whole thing in fibreglass and bin the wood. Likely wont cost much more and you can always use the ply as a plug if you need to make more.

because I'm being different to every other mk5 you see
its got a puma engine in it, and its stripped and lowered , a 'functional' splitter+airdam should be a nice look for it, and its no slouch.
not got the skills to fibreglass it, I'm happy using ply for now. if it breaks, iv got it there as a template to make another and all the bits needed too

50% there, just need the airdam, L brackets, rubber edging and metal strips for strength now and it'll be done! fitted some canards too while i was there.

It looks like a bodge job in my opinion.
You say it's stripped out but what exactly have you achieved apart from adding weight?

yeah top gear did one on the renalt 'avantime' ? and it caught fire, presumably because of the exhaust manifold or something hot causing it to catch fire my manifold it at the back of the engine and isnt near anything that gets hot, iv checked and Dave, its only added weight to the front, will keep the front end planted a bit better.. ill be moving the battery to the boot and putting the spare wheel in the boot, rather than it sitting underneath. it isnt finished yet and will have an airdam on it so no air is getting between the wood + bumper. only interior it has its the dash, carpet and steering wheel atm ( i still need seat/s ) .....in a sense yeah, it is a bit 'bodge' , because its not made by a professional with professional tools etc, but imo it looks good, and theres definitely no other mk5 fiesta like mine. I'm happy with it and its about 50% done

Off topic, but did you deliver a load of Yamaha Aerox parts to me in Essex, in said Fiesta, about 4 years ago?

Correct me if I am wrong (I'm fairly certain I'm not though) but it is common-place to use ply for front splitters, even on actual race cars, yes actual race cars. In the grand scheme of things you aren't adding huge amounts of weight. Reason ply is so popular; reasonably sturdy and low cost, cheap to replace when it gets busted up. Alumalite is another popular material, but is nowhere near as durable.

Tbf "actual race cars" would use carbon fibre, I've never seen any professional cars racing round with 18mm ply attached at the front,, but I could be wrong on that. I have seen good standard cars with them though still.
Chubz- I'm not trying to harshly slate it mate, I just personally don't think it looks "right" and most I've seen haven't be done to a good standard but you're happy with it and that's all that matters at the end of the day.
If it provides performance benefits to your car then its done it's job, I'd personally have used it as a template to have one made up out of a more suitable automotive material.
Have you thought about getting it wrapped?

I have seen good standard cars with them though still. Next time you got to le man 24h or any other kind of gt racing, take a close look at the cars, you might be in for a shock. Next time you go and watch a round of the BTCC, take a look at the ginetta g50/55s, these all run ply splitters. Outside of big budget motorsport, cf isn't the norm. Go to any club level motorsport and I am sure you will find cars running ply splitters. It really isn't as mental as it sounds

that looks to be about 4" too far off the floor to be particularly effective.
