Hi guys, simply was just wondering what I would need to put either a Zetec or a Duratec into a Mk2 Fiesta? I was mainly thinking of a ST170 Duratec but I believe the Zetec and Duratec engines are basically identical in terms of everything but capacity. I have been looking round the internet for a bit and just wanted a straight forward answer which seems to be a bit hard to come across. Any information is much appreciated...
Thanks in advance, Will.

The st170 lump isnt a duratec. Just a rebadged Zetec lump Zetec has a timing belt and the duratec is timing chain. There are a few zetec mk2 fiestas around, but from what ive read the st170 6speed box is easier to fit without chopping the chassis legs as its actually shorter than the bc5 box

Thanks in advance, Will. Totaly differant engines even the gearbox bolt pattern is differant on the duratec (uses a mazda BH pattern as it's a mazda engine) the ST170 however is not a duratec just a zetec badged as a duratec (Ford like to do really silly things like that ? ) and has VVt whereas the normal zetec doesn't.

The Mk1 requires modification to the inner wing to fit the BC or IB5 boxes but the mk2 doesnt, they go straight in. Hope that helps, there's some info on my site that might be useful if you go down the Zetec route. See link in my signature.

I was led to believe they were basically the same thing.. But yes, my plan would be to use the 6 speed box. Cheers.

Like I've said above mate, I was told they were basically the same thing! That's interesting though. If it uses a Mazda bolt pattern has anyone actually used a Mazda gearbox on one, Or is there basically no point? And is there any advantages of going for the Duratec with VVT over a non VVT Zetec? Cheers! The Mk1 requires modification to the inner wing to fit the BC or IB5 boxes but the mk2 doesnt, they go straight in. Also if anyone knows if I'll need to use any XR2 parts in terms of driveshafts etc that would be good to know.

You will need the XR2 drivers side tiebar and bracket from memory, you can use the lower spec shafts but they might die pretty quickly, you would be better off fitting an XR2 pair if you can get hold of some. The xrtwo forum should help with any questions, they have a Zetec conversion room. xrtwo.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=15

If you go zetec you can keep your box and shafts. It's just an engine change?

Duratec HE is a very different beast to the Zetecs. IMO they are probably trickier to fit too as they are taller than a Zetec as well.
As said the Zetecs do bolt up to a BC5. However, a few Zetec MkIIs I have seen have no cambelt covers (something I am not a fan of if the car is used daily) and the timing belt tensioner seems to rub the engine mount in some of them, which would have me wincing TBH!
Maybe that was poorly installed but in terms of bang per buck the Zetec powerplant is certainly the way forward.

So I'll have a look into where I can find some CR2 driveshafts. Will check that out now man. Thanks again! If you go zetec you can keep your box and shafts. It's just an engine change? Simply just because I was thinking of strength and reliability, the car will be tracked when complete. That's all. Duratec HE is a very different beast to the Zetecs. I was thinking the ST170 engine would be a good option as its (supposedly) 170bhp and pretty reliable for not much money.
Yeah i'm not a massive fan on no cambelt covers.. Right so, from what I've read on here and on Bobcat's blog. I think I might go for a black top Zetec. Thanks for your input dude!
