16 valve of some description would be my choice, or even go a bit differ the and do a NA 20 valve on carbs!
In all honesty the 1.8 k jet is a decent engine, and not set the world on fire but it's a good drive.
Looks pretty good so far though.
Are you going for early metal bumpers or the bigger plastic later ones?

I welded up the holes on the back for the bumpers as I want small metal bumpers, make the lines of the car much more prominent I'm thinking of buying a friends 1.8 8v engine from his mk1 on weber as I can get a set cheap just to get it on the road this summer. But for later on I was thinking more pd diesel engine. I'm not a fan of kjet, I'd rather carbs or injection. I did buy a 9a 16 from a corrado and thought about webers, but ended up selling it. Really not sure! I have a feeling it will go through a few engines

Well that's all part of the fun, having had a 1.8 8 valve and 2.0 8 valve a 2.8 VR6 and a 1.8 20VT, I have a favourite and its solely down to the noise and its pretty obvious what that one is!

I'd stay away from j-ket, I'm not a massive fan to be honest though I do like the noise my 1.8 8v makes!
I quite like the idea of a 20v on carbs, would be different!

I do love the original 1.8v in my Mk1 but i have always liked the idea of a abf on carbs, if it can hussle a fat mk3 along then its more than capable in a mk1.
The the rocco may get one, one day... But saying that the 20v on carbs sounds interesting.
I personally have had a lot of issues with PD engines, but that's probably down to the fact they were in abused company cars with VAG's silly longlife service intervals, whereas the same engines in the Seat's with their 10k intervals never had any issues...

Thank you all for the nice comments! lots of friendly people on here Well I nearly bought a pd130 engine today, but fell through. I absolutely love the sound of carbs, but just to dam thirsty! We've got a lotus elan at work on 40's and it does like 8mpg! Used quarter of a tank on road test!!! I would love a g60, but I see they've suddenly exploded in price and people want £1500 for one! I'm going to be patient and wait for a complete abf to come up for less than £300 with everything I need. It's a good engine, 150 odd ponies, electronic injection, should be fairly easy to splice into my loom. And as funds allow later on I can turbo/g60 charge it

Lovely job, can't wait to se the shiny bits going on Me too indeed! a current lack of funds is holding fire on that unfortunately I'm unsure whether to get it all back together temporary and stick an original gti engine in the bay on carbs so I can use it over this summer, then strip it back down to rebuild properly over next winter, or do a bit at a time OR wait till next summer and fully rebuild it from now till then Not sure, just want to drive the dam thing this summer! especially as all my friends projects will be done
