Sounds good mate. I'm heading back to my parents to spend a few hours on it this evening. Hoping to get the door locks and catches in. If it doesn't rain too much and maybe a quick Hoover out if I have time but that may have to wait for tomorrow. I have booked an MOT for Monday morning so I can legally drive the car back to my house in Sheffield so hopefully everything shall be a go and I'll enjoy the drive

So I got a couple of hours on it this evening. My aim was to fit the locks and catches to make it more secure and in turn this would enable me to drive it to an MOT on Monday morning. I made a start hunting thought the hundreds of screws in the interior to find the correct ones for the latches and locks and also to find the linkages required to operate said locks. Turns out half the stuff I require was back home on the new doors so I didn't have any linkages and only one lock hmm not going so well. But I thought I'd soldier on and see where it took me. I ended up fitting the catches and interior handles so that the doors would shut properly and stay shut without the need for cable ties and gaffer tape. I also fitted the passenger door lock and locked the door from the inside. So now the car is 50% secure I still have a piece of gaffer tape to prevent water ingress to the drivers door through the lock hole but I'm happy with that plus it enables easy access so a quick flick with a key (screwdriver) and I'm in I also fitted the drivers door mirror which I believe is the minimum required by law. Forgot to take any photos of my efforts due to time constraints and the weather, so you'll have to make do with these two. I thought I'd swap the batteries over for one which is given a quick charge. It probably needed longer but managed to fire up with a small jump from a leisure battery handing around in my dads garage. I then stuck the new looking halfords one on charge which i shall leave for a few days on trickle and see what happens. Anyway evidence that it looks like I might be road legal, well in the light department at least. Before the journey on Monday morning I will check all fluids and tyre pressures and then have fingers and toes crossed I'll make it the 15 miles home

Not a good start to this morning. I couldn't get the car started hmmm I reckon both batteries I have a abosolutally knackered.
Plus there appeared to be quite a large amount of oil on my parents drive which I'm sure will go down a treat.
Couldn't even jump the car so I'm not sure what's up at the minute. It seems to be defeating me and I'm loosing the will with it.
I'm going to give both batteries I have a good charge and I hope that that will do it the only issue is I have to find the time to get he car back home at some point. Unless someone wants to make me an offer on it hahaha.
Just waiting to be picked up while my daily goes in for repair. Hopefully the hire car will be mildly interesting to make me feel a little better.

Having owned mk1 and mk2 Xr2s they are still my faves. My Grandparents had one of the first mk3 1.4's and although comfortable it just didn't handle like the mk2 which is what put me off mk3's in general really. But maybe I'll give one a go! I'll never afford another mk2 now anyway..
Zetec is not so bad, lower BHP to differentiate with the RS1800, but by all accounts the handling was more balanced than the RS and a bit better than the CVH car. Originally Ford thought the lower output model would help for insurance purposes but in the end it made no difference, you still got raped driving one in the early 90's....

Did you leave the battery connected? if so could be a drain if it has an aftermarket alarm that would be a good place to start.

There may well be a drain but I think both batteries are goosed as only charging to about 12.3/4 should be 12.6 for fully charged. I will see what happens on Sunday morning. I've got a better pair of jump leads to try aswell

SUCCESS!! ? Got it home. Fired up on the good battery and ran well after a couple of tappets had got some oil pulled well and cruised happily. The steering however is a bag of curse word and will need some major attention. But, it's home so I'm happy I can tinker as and when and get it sorted.

Don't be down heartened by the car, it's an old Ford .....in fact it's an old car so jobs like what you've discovered will be there. I'd be inclined to strip it down so as to reveeal all of its horrors and work through the issues one by one. A re-shell won't do this justice as yet another old Ford will die and this looks more than redemeable.

I know what you mean mate. Don't worry I will be trying my hardest to save this. Fortunately it's one that I've always wanted so it doesn't really matter how long it takes to make right. The best thing is it's a complete car even down to many rare bits so I'm happy about that. I will be stripping it down as far as possible to assess the damage. Just makes me laugh what is aloud on the roads these days

Looks bad but once you get stuck In not that difficult a job once you get stuck in, with a car stripped out a couple of weekends will see new or repaired floors and replaced sills.

Awesome cheers. The prices on there are crazy cheap and can collect free from down the road. Still no inner sills though. Looks like I'll have to fab up my own

Do you want some standard dials? Putting a bespoke dash in my race car so the cluster will just get binned otherwise!
