The way I look at this sort of thing is that I could fix the problems with the car I've got and know it's good or I could buy another curse word box with a list of problems I don't know about. That's the gamble. That's exactly how I'm starting to see it. this is pretty much spot on i think, esp if you are talking here about a daily it really is often better the devil you know

Figured it was due an update. Saab went to a specialist yesterday for stiff gears sorted, and suspension noises checked.
It had other ideas.
New front discs and pads, new rear discs and pads, nsr calliper, NSr spring, Nsr shock mount, both rear rubber seats.
Front drop links, and bushes.
Gear turret repair still waiting.
Suspension? Well appears a local backstreet garage has fitted incorrect shocks/mounts... So they've twisted.
So it goes in tomorrow for full check, expected to need:
2 front shocks, mounts, bearings, springs. (12 months old, ruined)
Gear turret repair
2 front tyres
Never, start digging on a 10 year old, 130,000 mile car.

I'm worrying about the amount of knocks the suspension is making on mine. Mot not till June though.

Don't talk to me about saabs......
I was given a 1999 saab 93 turbo by my dad as he's currently off work long term with an illness so cant drive. I budget roughly £100 a month 'just incase' something goes wrong with it.
In the space of 6 months of ownership its had rear pads and discs, 2 front tyres, a full set of vacuum pipes, a lambda sensor, centre exhaust, temp sensor, a full service and now it looks like the DI cassette could be on its way out!!!
I should have stayed on the bus.

72 Toledo 1300 What broke the camels back? Public embarrassment after needing a string of new parts. Started needing a lot of choke adjustment, fixed this with carb rebuild and new cables, misfiring badly, fixed this with new spark plugs and wires and electronic ignition after much fault finding, fixed oil leaks etc then rear axle mounts rusted out whilst I was driving at about 60mph back home from Basingstoke, I don't know how an accident didn't happen that day. I got fed up with fixing it and just wanted to get to the top of the mountain and start making it look nice. One day I spoke to the girlfriend about a car I had always fancied owning, a newish Clio RS F1 edition (cup chassis + other options) One day I booked a test drive, it was raining so I had the wipers going and the lights/heater on, I got speaking to the chap about my triumph and he seemed to like it as everyone who I spoke to did. I told him my story and recent woes. Went for the ride in the Clio, got back in the triumph, turned the key... nothing. Flat battery, everything was switched off and it had only been sat there for half an hour or so and was still warm. I had to go into the dealership and ask for a jump, he laughed but I just couldn't bring myself to see the funnyside, I think I muttered something about seeing him very, VERY soon. I got the car back and diagnosed it to need an alternator another reasonably expensive component. What did I do? Sold it stupid (barely more than £100) cheap to a chap who had other triumphs and fixed it to sell it on... Did I go back for that Clio, nope, that'll teach him for laughing, I spent my mucho money on the golf with modern engine I have now which is super reliable and slightly retro, I do often miss the triumph as I could have had it going again if I had waited a while, I had replaced a lot so knew it was getting better and wouldn't necessarily leave me stranded but I didn't want to take that chance and had to take tools with me everywhere because it was my daily, I cant afford more than one car at a time and don't have space for that either.

To me that is a near new car. My daily Falcon (1990) will be 26 years old this year and has 270,000 kms on the clock. Previous two ('89 & '91) both went past 450,000.
