With the Mercedes W123 Coupe reliably racking up the miles, only needing a bit of servicing now and again and our Christians´ 1972 Taunus nearly ready for paint i thought it was time to fill up the garage with another rusty old Ford again. So i popped over to Holland the other day and bought this ... ...and to make sure the garage, carport , shed and house are full of Ford bits i then went out yesterday and picked this up. Now there is a reason why i bought both cars and it´s not because the Estate is rotten. Anyone see where this build is going? Can´t beat a good welding thread eh Cheers, Dave

A two door estate is what I'm guessing. Hopefully! But then on the other hand Oldbus surely has some talents to build trailers from cars ... Bookmark this! Maybe both, 2 door estate towing a Cortina/Taunus trailer (although the other trailer was made from 2 rear ends wasn't it?). But surely 2 door Cortina's are getting rare now and would be worth saving as a 2 door, I'd still like to see it turn into an estate/tourer/kombi though).

Not sure where the build is going but they both look great cars! Especially the two door.... They both look a lot better in the photos than they do in reality, especially the estate which has holes in it all over the place. A two door estate is what I'm guessing. ..was a bit of a giveaway posting up the pics of both cars eh Hopefully! But then on the other hand Oldbus surely has some talents to build trailers from cars ... Bookmark this! No trailer this time mate, just the 2 door estate. Dude, you have a log fire in your garage? Now THAT I'm jealous of.. ;-) CFD Guilty as charged your honour It´s nice having a few creature comforts in the garage especially when you´re getting on a bit and it´s cold outside. It´d be worth saving the 2 door but it´d be no good to me if i can´t sleep in the back when we´re off toclassic car meets in the summer. (Not forgetting the fridge full of beer and bratwursts that need to go in the boot) Bit if nitpicking here but it's not a Combi....it's a Stationwagon Mr Woody answered for me and explained it better than i could have done. The Estate is a Belgien reimport bought in Holland by an englishman living in Germany and in the paperwork it says Ford TC3 Stationwagen, otherwise known as Taunus Turnier, or Kombi or Cortina estate. I don’t care - really I don't... At all!!! It’s Oldbus It’ll involve fabrication and welding and the end result will be great and the journey will be a nice one…… I’m in Cheers Ian Thanks. Love a wagon so looking forward to this Hope you like welding threads. I hold my trap shut....but this will be great! Cheers Danke Thorsten... I bought the estate with the plan just to restore it and make it go a bit faster but then remembered Mark´s (Nightmares) MK3 van and thought why not convert it to 2 door. Once i got it back home i then started looking around for the parts i´d be needing and to cut a long story short found the 2 door an hour down the road so i grabbed that too. I´d like to go for the factory look so i´ll not only be needing the doors but the B psot, side windows, front seats etc.and it was cheaper the buy the whole car than source the parts individually. The way i see it there´s two ways of doing this. Plan A was to weld up all the rust on the estate and convert it to 2 door or Plan B convert the two door into an estate. Now i know plan B sounds a bit daft and it´s the route i´ll be going down, but there´s method in my madness. To get the conversion looking right the C post will have to be spot on, if you convert the estate you´d have to widen the original estate C post by at least 10mm to get it to fit and i don´t think that´ll look right. Secondly, the estate looks pretty grim underneath so i´ll hopefully be saving a lot of time doing it this way. Well i got a couple of hours in the garage this evening so i took a big deep breath and got the angleginder warmed up....... Rustwise it´s not too bad (and definately better than the estate) but once i´d scraped out the original Ford building foam out of the corner pocket... i found some rust inbetween the foam and the underbody sealant. I won´t be repairing it yet though as i´ll probably be using the back end out of the estate. So what´s the plan? I´ll prepare the 2 door roughly to accept the roof and boot floor out of the estate. Then i´ll chop up the estate, put all the bits back together, give it all a dab of paint, redo the interior and then probably drop in a V6, upgrade the brakes and diff and have some fun. Cheers, Dave

Excellent plan! Get yourself warmed up doing this to the Taunus, then do it all over again with a pair of 123's.....
Always liked the idea of a two door 123 estate....
Oh, and bookmarked.

see I was right - pointless attempts to second guess - just roll with it .......my sentiments entirely Well, when you put it like that it sounds so... simple. *grabs popcorn* That was my first thought, too. Followed by: somewhere in ireland somebody would do that in a couple of weeks... To be honest it´s not exactly rocket science and if it was, it´d definately be beyond me...... Excellent plan! Get yourself warmed up doing this to the Taunus, then do it all over again with a pair of 123's..... Always liked the idea of a two door 123 estate.... Oh, and bookmarked. Hi Nigel, i´ve always fancied doing a shooting brake W123 but instead of a two door estate converting a Coupe into one instead..... That looks like a plan.... How is the plan for the rear side window? One piece? Cheers No Thorsten, i´ll be using the side window from the two door and the boot window off the estate with a C post inbetween. Well that´s the plan anyway, we´ll have to wait a couple of weeks to see if it all works out. Here is a GIF for your inspiration - performed on an old passat though. Thanks for that mate, mine´ll be slightly different as a i have to swap over the roof as well. I chopped of the rest of the boot this afternoon. This is a far as i want to go at the moment on the two dooor, so i dragged the estate out of the carport and started taking it to pieces. It doesn´t look too bad in these photos... but i swept the floor three times whilst i was taking off the towbar and filled a whole bucket with the rust that had fallen off the floor. With a bit of luck i should have the roof off next weekend, cheers, Dave

I'm lovin this, Oldbus!....always dreamed of a 2 door estate E90-1/2!....or E40-1/2....E30-1/2.... JP ..not forgetting the towbar for your trailer Well i had the house to myself this afternoon once i´d knocked off work so i thought i´d start cleaning up the rear corner. Now i knew the rear end was rusty which is hardly surprising when you just slap another rear skirt over the old one to bodge it through an MOT. I should have seen it when i viewed the car because if you look closely you can see the original panel through the holes where the towbar cables ran through, with a bit of luck i´ll be able to reuse the one in the 2 door though. Looks like it´s had a bit of a rear end shunt as well or should the rear end be this warped? With the side panel removed you can start to see why i´m converting the 2 door and not restoring the estate. Good news is i´ve been taking some measurements and i´m quite confident now that the conversion will work. I´ve checked the angle of the C post and it´s exactly the same as on the 2 door so i won´t have any problems getting the side window to fit. and it doesn´t matter that the side pockets in the estate are shot, as it looks like i´ll be able to keep the (rust free) bootfloor from the 2 door. Happy days, cheers, Dave
