I think that's an FTO - I was going to say it's not a Galant, but the Archive 70's book says Galant Coupe FTO, model code A61/A62/A63, 1378cc 4cyl OHV engine, 1971-75. Quite a chunky bobtail look to them, bit like an AMX.
What's really weird is that there's also a Galant GTO, which was a bigger coupe (white car to the left of red one above) running from 1970-76.
I'd say FTO was replaced by Celeste, and GTO by Sapporo.
What's even odder is that both FTO and GTO spanned two generations of Galant saloon/estate, line-ups which included 2dr hardtops.
Does that make sense at all?

I've never seen the FTO that shape before, but it does look pretty smart. Would agree with you about the model run of the GTO. I've seen the Galant GTO before, or one to be precise. There used to be an old guy had one locally about 1987ish. It was dark metallic green with bolt on arches in body colour which looked all original. It was on steel wheels too IIRC. The car was P registration so that would make it around 75-76 anyway, so would seem to be about right.  I always liked the look of that car, I always stopped and looked round it when I saw it parked up. |

Whilst I was over working at JUN in Japan, they had just built a 70s GTO with a Galant VR4 turbo engine. Kept it original dark green with period body mods. Was luurvely.

That's what the Japanese are so good at! But is it any different to BMC,BL etc selling half a dozen different mid-size saloon cars, or GM selling numerous versions of the same platform? They got sold through different dealer chains and had subtly different appeal to alternative sectors of the market.
I've been lucky enough to see one GTO here in the UK, I think all ours got the bolt-on flares.

Beautiful little thing, f*cks me off to be honest that there were no Galant Coupes after the Sapporo, all the subsequent ones would have looked really good as a 2 - dr.
