A quick query if i may....
My 1975 Midget is should be eligible for tax exemption this year (manufactured in May 1975). My road tax is due end of February.
Forgive me if i misunderstand how it works, but at what point can i apply for historic vehicle class (and thus VED exemption) ?
I was on the impression that, last year, it needed to be made before 1st Jan 1975 (thus mine was not eligible), whereas this year it should be.
I've attempted to search the DVLA website, but the only info they have relates to last years exemption date cut off (see above).
And once i can apply, what documents do i need to take along to the Post Office - I've got the V11 VED reminder, V5, insurance and even a photocopy of the original reg. document from 1975.
Apologies if I'm being thick, but i thought it worth an ask...

I think you might have to wait until Mr Osborne's budget in March for any confirmation that the exemption will be extended up to 01/01/1976.

I think you might have to wait until Mr Osborne's budget in March for any confirmation that the exemption will be extended up to 01/01/1976. The exemption was made 'rolling' again in 2014 after an initial single reinstatement, so you'd be looking for proposals to cancel it. It extends automatically.

You would have to pay for your VED for March, so buy 6 months, then apply for Historical VED class on April 1st. You do this by filling in the 'changes to vehicle' section on the V5C noting the Taxation Class is now 'Historic' and taking it to the Post Office. You will receive a refund from the DVLA for any unused months, but bearing in mind you'll already be in April once you can apply, and the DVLA process will take a couple of weeks, you're going to lose out on paying for April's VED as well, I'm afraid. You'll get the V5C back with the taxation class changed from PLG to Historic in a short while. From then on you can just apply as usual for VED, just without having to pay each time.
