Waze is owned by Google and uses the same maps and data. Tbh, all of the free apps are pretty good as they mostly share the same data source, can't actually remember the last time I used my Tomtom... Also, if you're looking for a great phone holder have a look at Radmo. Fits into the cd slot and can have the phone in portrait so ideal for satnav duties. P.

Some excellent advice here, thanks everyone. As for a mount, I have the similar CD Slotmount which was £20 with two holders

Google Maps is perfectly fine to use as Sat Nav. You only need data switched on to find the location initially, once the course has been calculated you can switch data off and it navigates via GPS.

I'm another advocate of Nokia HERE - i bought a new Garmin Nuvi just over a year ago, and although it is good most of the time, HERE has been faultless the whole time and has pretty much replaced the Garmin.
I do have a fairly limited data plan on my phone so the ability to download the maps beforehand is very handy.

I use the free version of Sygic as it doesn't use data and I've been very impressed with it.

Another one who often uses Here or Google maps on a Nokia, although I tend to use a combination of an old fashioned map book along with Google Maps Street View on the laptop to pick up landmarks. I generally pre-plan the journey first for anywhere within Manila itself and just memorise it. I do use the phone for outside the city, finding hotels, etc., and that works well. I bought a Garmin and it's absolutely hopeless here, so I gave it to Madam so she can get lost and pick up all the fines for driving kak-handed down the one way streets it always tries to send you down. And road signs? Forget it!

So, we took a little jaunt to Braintree today, which is forty-eight minutes from home. Tried NavMii on the way there, which was absolutely terrible, couldn't hold a signal for more than five minutes. I downloaded Waze while having a coffee and tried that as we popped over to Witham and then drove home, which took about seventy minutes and used just under 28Mb.

Google Maps would have used a few kb to search the location - it doesn't use data during nav. As I understand it, that's only to work out the route. If I need dynamic routing during the journey (because of traffic or an accident), then I need data switched on.

+1 for HERE Maps (By Nokia) never let me down and you can download the maps at home via WiFi so no need to use data whilst out and about.
Cheap, simple and free - what is not to like?

I use a mix of Google Maps and a Tom Tom..... But the first app which creates an option to avoid speedbump littered roads is getting my money!

I've been using google maps for about a year now, generally impressed. But I do keep getting frustrated when I meet closed roads, it's good on traffic, but never seems to know about road closures. And when I meet a blocked route, I can't find an easy way to ask it to avoid a roadblock, like my old Tom Tom used to be able to do, unless I'm just being thick??
As result of this thread I just downloaded waze, I notice it has a blocked route feature, so hoping it works a bit better!
