My sat nav isn't supported by the manufacturer any more, so no map updates, and I was thinking of replacing it. However there's plenty of Android apps available (NavMii and Waze to name but two) so I was thinking I might as well stick with one of those. But was wondering how much data they eat up? Any idea how much would I use on an hour's journey?

I use Waze and its better than my Garmin sat nav. I'm not sure what it's like on data use.

Do they use data? I thought they relied on GPS during the drive?

Found this on Google
On average most users on these forums have said they use no more than 200MB per month.
I'm on an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile UK as I consider myself a heavy user. Waze follows me in my Taxi 4-5 nights a week and I've used 59.84MB in 9 days averaging 6 hours a night. So that's around 220MB per month for me.

Here maps has the option to download the maps so it doesn't use any data. I use it fairly regularly and it's never let me down

I always use google maps, its never let me down and does live traffic updates. Gets my vote too. FOr some reason the blue navigation icon disappeared in a recent update but the shortcut is downloadable in the app store. Don't know if it runs offline maps but I'm not complaining for free.

Do they use data? I thought they relied on GPS during the drive? ^This I use Navmii on a basic hudle tablet, it works fine even when it has no t'internet connection (using inbuilt maps so no data use), guess it means tablets etc now have gps built in even if there's no gps app Good bits : it's free, nice, clear is simple to browse maps and zoom areas, very handy on roadtrips / RRG runs ok but not so good : enter postcode and the street is listed a long way down the menu (below recent locations, favorites...) the map scrolls as you drive but if you browse away from the "here" location the scrolling stops. the menus are not intuitive but maybe i just need to get used to them... think the free version is uk only but that's not a problem for me Overall, very impressed

I used to be a die hard TomTom fan, but I've been using Waze for a couple of years, and find it really good. Still doesn't have offline capability tho, so you need data OR, start the route when you are on your home wifi, but will still work with no connection if already going. It just won't update the traffic, etc...

I'm a recent convert to Waze and really like it. My newly acquired Jag has factory sstnav which is brilliant but the data disc is from 2008 so I can only to places that existed in 2008.

Co-pilot is a paid app, but does me well - I use it on my Hudle tablet - and used it on my phone but my new one the gps is useless - Hudle is essentially now my sat nave and for the children to play games.

I use, and swear by google maps. It has live updates so will reroute if any accidents have occurred and instantly take you an alternative way. Sometimes in a right odd fashion but this weekend alone it saved me 2 hours.
It seems to work with no signal at times as well.
When I am abroad I use a Garmin. We have probably had it nearly six years now, I have used it to drive across Europe multiple times and it even survived being hit by a lorry. Me and that satnav have been through some adventures!
However if it's apps, I use google maps.

Google Maps again for me, the old man uses Sygic, but why pay for something Google maps does and well?
On data if you start the route on wifi it will preload almost everything. Loads of route choices and traffic information, plus I find it very quick to recalc new routes if you choose to turn off.
