Anyone know where the indicator relay is? Spent ages looking for the hazards untill I realised it hasnt got any! There are switches missing and switches I don't know what they do. I think it'll take a while to unravel all the bad connectors and electical tape. You still need the key to unlock the steering on the original ignition but there is another key for the working ignition under the dash lol. Oh well, readers rides thread coming up. On Marks CF2 it's under the dash near the fuse box, silver cylinder. Replace it with a modern electronic one if you want reliability

Aparantly its behind the dash on the cf1.
I soooo don't want to go to work tomorrow. I'm desperate to rip this thing apart!

Did it ever get going on 4 cylinders? If it didn't I doubt it fuel, fingers crossed it's electrical but I would be running a compression test before going much further, especially given my own history with burned out valves...

I don't think so.
It did seem to improve a bit though.
Sometimes it would get a bit stutery but it felt like it would increase power in a stutter rather than decrease.
You know sometimes a car is running good then hesitates and stutters, it was almost the opposite. Like momentarily sparking on that last cylinder.
Now its home ill have a look (I did nothing before bringing it home) then ill take it to a friend to compression test.
Head will be coming off to do the valve seats anyway but I need to get it tested in the next 3 weeks so want it running first if poss.
Its done 300 miles in the last few years and it passed its tests and I have the emission results. I guess if it had done a valve/seat/piston etc it would fail emmissions?
We'll see. I will be going over it anyway, just would rather do it next month than right now.

If my old CF was anything to go by, the gearstick rattle is standard! Also took a nearly new one to Sweden in 1974, the stick rattled on that one too! Steve Just saw this. I'm sure ive seen anti rattle shims somewhere. Loads to do before I get to things like this though.

Great thread, love the attitude of just giving it a go.

Believe me, if I could have found a better van, or a nearer van, id have bought it. This £1000 millstone is the best I could find! Ive budgeted for repairs and mods, but if I could have found a nice one for 3k id have bought it. But they are hard to find now, and all rotten. This is not a good van, but it is a good bedford. Just giving it a go is what you have to do when you have no alternative

Sounds like the whole thing is a hazard. Glad you made it home. Good luck with the project.

brilliant mate you did it Few things you mentioned... The missfire i would say is electrical, if it sputtered and seemed to fire up on you i'm guessing buggered plug, lead or cap. Sounds like with you giving it some heavy throttle it made the spark jump whatever issue is in its way. Gear lever rattle.... what gearbox? 4spd or 5spd? the 4's have an external linkage you can shim up to cut down on noise and tighten up the whole gear change process. switches, if they are of the big square rocker type then these have a habit of snapping the lugs that hold them together, and the spring plates etc force them apart thus breaking all the connections inside, replacement ones are rare and expensive (lighting switch on ebay for £63 !) replace them all with aftermarket ones. Indicator stalk has a habit of being curse word, get an aftermarket one. Passenger mirror is always useless, mine wont sit in any position except looking straight at the rear wheel, i adjust it, and it's fine for a mile or two, next time i look it's staring at the wheel again...handy for reversing though lol look forward to your posts on this one

Electrical has always been my instinct from the second I heard it run.
Its 4 speed with overdrive.
Round pull switches.
It has some horrid plastic car type door mirror. Found 2 new heads in the back, just need an arm for the passenger side.

I had the same dilemma with my Talbot and settled on a scruffy example with some rot than one with hidden horrors under tidy paintwork , best advice I have is upgrade the running gear . I ditched the non turbo diesel and fitted a Volvo t5 lump with the box and hydraulic steering rack . Same mpg as the diesel but much quieter and obviously faster . Cheapest I can think of for that would be a 3.0 s type v6 with manual box and they are pretty bombproof and peanuts . I've got a complete car in my yard that I can't seem to part with in case I do another camper

But you could go for another good run and see if getting it real hot helps?

i want a cf beavertail for retro vauxhall track day hauling Chassis cab types are easier to find. When I get some space I want to get one, and a rotten camper, and use the lower body half to make a van bodied pick up.
