Ok when I turn the stereo up the left side gets louder before the right when you get above 3/4 it evens out, I'm not sure about the colours for the speaker wiring, the stereo I'm using is a pioneer ke-1300 I've soldered a aux lead to the volume pot but I'm sure it was like it before, when I get chance I'll check the voltage coming out the stereo to rule that out, but I'm thinking it's either the balance joystick thing or I've wired the speakers up wrong, but I could of soldered something I shouldn't when I fitted the aux lead ?? Oh and the stereo only has three speaker wires left right and negative

When i used to fit stereo stuff in my mk2's i always bypassed the joystick on the dash, iirc i could never get them to work properly with aftermarket stuff.

Thats because the joystick commoned the speaker grounds together and high powered car audio kit does not like it. The speaker grounds must be kept seperate.

Oh and the stereo only has three speaker wires left right and negative I suspect that you've got either the left or right positive speaker output connected to the common speaker ground to the joystick. Effectively it is shorting that channel to ground via the joystick. You need to pull out the joystick and check which speaker wires are commonned at the back of it. Then wire the radio ensuring that only the speaker common is connected to the joystick common. I'm not sure what you mean by 'I'll check the voltage coming out of the stereo' as it will be a multitude of varying frequencies at different levels, there should be no DC voltage measurable! The only way to check it really is to put it on to an oscilloscope.

The problem was when I soldered the aux cable to the board I accidentally joined two terminals together all sorted now
