Potentially non-retro content... I picked up a new daily this week, it's 15 years old but has full, main dealer, service history, every year and every 10,000 miles, stamp in the book. This didn't persuade me to buy it, the overall condition of the car did, however, it puts me in a situation. If I sell the car on, it will likely be to a non-car person, and non-car people seem to value a full service book over everything else. When I've looked online, to get it serviced at my local Toyota dealer is a minimum £199 and for that, they'll change the oil, thats it. Yeah they'll inspect most other bits bit they don't touch the brakes, they don't touch the air filter, fuel filter, alternator belt or spark plugs, so I'd still have to do all that myself, or pay an extra £100 for the "Premium Service". So my question is, is it going to be worth it? Am I likely to lose any value from the car? It certainly didn't add any for me, it was almost the cheapest on auto trader! For pennance... a thorough service!  |

If it was under 5 years old and you intended to sell it within a couple of years I'd keep the service record up to date. No need for it to be main agent though.
Given that it's 15 years old I reckon there is no point at all paying just to keep the service record up to date. Anyone buying a car that age is going to go off condition. If you keep the record and then make sure you can show you've looked after it (probably 10 times better than a main agent anyway) that's as good as it gets.

What you need to consider is would you get that money back if you sell it, no you wouldn't so why waste the money.
Dealers stamps are worthless on anything but new or high value cars.

Ive bought lots of forty year plus cars with full history,and currently all four of our cars have full history,it's great to read through and gives a car a great selling point and provenance,always makes me laugh when I ask the question if the car has history and the seller gives it the "are you sure?" Line,,,,,yea I am sure and always buy cars with plenty of history

Cost about £3 and it seems to appease folks by making the book look fuller, plus it keeps a proper record for me I guess...

Fair enough, I'm really not sure whether it would make a big difference or not.
I know when I bought a very nice 635 Highline a couple of years ago I was bowled over when the guy opened the service book and there was a main dealer stamp for every single year from 1990 up to present time. I think I'd already decided it was the car for me but that definately clinched it.

One of the earlier points summarised it really well for me.
Let's say I spend £199 a year on stamps, and then a further £40 changing the bits they don't do.
After 2 years (the longest I've kept a car) I will have spent £500. Is it going to be worth £500 more? Probably not as I only paid £1200 in the first place! :/

Yes I would on something like that, if you think how many don't have a full service history now and you keep it 5 years 20 year service history is a nice bit of history to have on it.
It always looks nice and can command a higher premium when it comes to sell it later on.

Hi, If you're going to leave it standard it's arguable. But if you're going to modify or restore it then there's no point because that will make the history meaningless.

Here is my 2p.
More than likely, a car guy (or girl) is going to be interested in a 15+ year old MR2, 'normal' people will just think it's old= rubbish.
As long as you keep receipts for any stuff you buy (with mileage when fitted) or work you have done, then I think that is much more interesting/telling than a little rubber stamp. It's all history, it all shows the car has been looked after.
Eg, receipt from 2/4/15. 2x track rod ends. Then a scribble saying fitted 3/4/16 at xxx miles. Follow that up with a receipt from a tyre place for tracking on 4/4/16, you can but oil and filters for next weekend, still have money in your pocket compared to the main stealer and much more comprehensive history.

Much better to keep a record of the work and do it yourself with genuine Toyota bits, then keep the money you have saved for any little bits (trim etc) that needs doing.
I say this as often I have seen cars with full main dealer history but anything on top of that has been left, so even though the running gear is sound, everything else has fallen apart.

Personally I'd keep it up, maybe not main dealer, mainly because they're expensive for what they are, but possibly an independent specialist.
The cars I have now I have no intention of selling, I know we all probably think that but I am very happy with them all, so servicing them myself is more than enough for me.
I bought something the other month, looked through the service book and it wasn't stamped for the running in service, let alone anything else. I phoned the dealer to see if they had anything on record and if they could provide any further info. Turns out they didn't even take it in for the running in service!
