I really don't like them, from T2, T25/T3, T4, T5, T6 they're just so overpriced for what they are and above all are just a van. Semi-customised T5's are becoming a real cliche round my way
So for anyone that doesn't own one of the above, what medium sized van do you own/have owned and what do you think of it?

Driven lots of vans, sorry to say that the t4 and t5 have been the best (apart from the benefit of being ableb to get transits sideways lol). Much more car like and refined than most others, that said the Vivaro or whatever its called was decent, but they suffer from crappy gearboxes.

If they let everyone be negative, then its a slippery slope into Barryboys territory. |

The ethos of this forum is that if you can't say anything nice, best to not say anything at all. If they let everyone be negative, then its a slippery slope into Barryboys territory. I don't think it's hate, the OP is just stating fact. They are not my thing either & I've driven a few, but as with all the T's that proceeded they have become a cult type of thing, which in turn drives up the price, it does not necessarily make them better. I've had loads of vans for my business over the years & most have been Merc Sprinters ( great vans, but big) atm I've downsized to a Pug Expert & it's great, drives just like a nice car, 2 litre & 6 speed box, nice thing. |

or something french like an expert/dispatch or boxer/relay, these are either side of the size of the transporter van.

I say go for a hiace but I'm biased towards toyotas. I've got an 89 hiace 2.4 column shift and love it. Lowering blocks and wind down the torsion bars with a nice set of wheels. Inspiration   |

What you using the van for? Actual van duties or surfbus/day van/camper conversion.
I'd get a mk6 Transit, spend days welding it back together. Fit coilovers from a T5 and get some 17" steels from extreme offset. Could be a cool rig.

I love the VW van and had a T5 facelift for a bit and loved it, but the ones I want are too much for me. So instead I went for a Vito van and loved the thing to bits, some suffer with rust, they made a fancy one with 6 big seats and a 2.8 VR6 auto which was pretty cool. I really liked mine despite them being considered as one of the worst things ever.
Japan make some pretty cool things, hiace are pretty cool, then you've got the import things like the Granvia.
There is a heck of a lot out there and I enjoy the variety that's seen now where a lot of people can't spend £18,000 on a bay window camper. It kind of forces people to be a bit more inventive.
That said I would love to own a split screen VW, probably even a crew cab Doka.

Bit old, but CF!!  Love mine. No good if you don't like welding though. I like my bosses new transit custom (t4/5/6 size) but it wasnt cheap. |

I always think that getting something like a Hyundai van/8 seater would get you much more for your money for the base vehicle.
However - if you want to convert it or modify it, you'll then need to design everything from scratch - the VW's are popular, so there's plenty of people/companies out there making stuff designed to fit and bolt straight in. You won't get that with less popular vehicles.

I hired a Hiace powervan once and was very impressed. Went like a scalded cat and had a better ride than my mk2 Cavalier. We have a 58 plate one of those at work, It's actually quite a nice van. Most of us prefer using that over the mk2 octavia estate (1.6 petrol). Only problem we have had is it's had an annoying clunk from the rear on full lock from new & nobody seems to be able to diagnose it. RWD too |

Jesus guys he just said one sentence which needed to be said to gravitas the whole point - why not just pass it over and offer some suggestions - he feels you do not get value for money with those cars thats all .
If you have nothing positive to say don't say anything - that applies to all of us doesn't it , including me .
Anyway , it depends what you are after and budget i suppose , with a low budget i think just pick whatever is in good condition and has easy spares . If you have more money perhaps the Vauxhall van if your looking ofr a camper conversion - i don't think the gearbox issue would be a problem if you find one thats had it fixed or a easy life as a electricans van or something .
I say that just because you do seem to get a modernish van for much better value than a Vw

I watched my boss throw money constantly at his. Wasnt high miler or abused.
Constant big bill problems, gearboxes, turbos, then it put a rod through the block.
When do gearboxes blow? 80k?
Seen them go as early as 50k too.

The gearboxes (is it F40?) just seem to be junk & replacements are expensive as they are in demand lol.
