As I understand it, all cars that are classed as historic vehicles can have them? (Please correct me if I am wrong!!) So if I transfer a modern numberplate of my choice onto an old car then am I allowed to buy a white on black numberplate with a modern reg for a historic car?

Just want to point out I am completely new to the car world and as of yet can't even drive let alone own a car.
This is just speculative.
Oh, and, is it true I can buy a customized plate if no one has made it before? I was thinking SEB 1337 or something like that?

Legally I think it has to be 1975 or earlier for white on black or silver on black number plates, at least that was what I was told when first shown how to make the plates, as for private registrations I'm not sure as the number plate can't be put on a car older than the year the number plate is for, that's all I know

Hi, Vehicles registered on or after Jan 1 1973 must have reflective plates. They were available from the mid 60s and lots over vehicles had them before '73. So if your car is older than '73 you can put black and white plates on if you wish. You can't put a reg number younger than the age of your car on.

Edit: You can transfer a number from an older donor car but the donor must be taxed and MOTed or you can get an unissued number from DVLA.

Used to be silver on black was pre 73, but now it seems they are allowed on anything registered as historic, which is currently pre 75 (I think)

That's all well and good in thought, but you can't put a new plate on an older car - it has to be from something older. |

Plus it has to fit into the various rules of prefix / suffix combinations etc. A colleague had a l33t plate once. Think it was L33 TDP but obviously illegal spacing runs the risks of being fined / plate withdrawn / flamed by some RR members. |

They sent out a pamphlet which said black and silver plates can be used on vehicles whihc qualify for historic VED status, however the actual Display of Registration Marks Legislation has not been amended to this effect and indeed the DVLA notice points you to those very Regs. DVLA notices don't over-rule Legislation, so if you do run a black and silver plate on a 73-75 car, you run the risk of prosectution. |

Unfortunately you cannot apply a VRM (registration number) which is newer than the vehicle it is being transferred onto. |

It came about when the 'rolling road' for Historic VED class just happened to stop on the same year as the cut-off for black and silver plates, so for ease of description the DVLA simply said only "Historic" VED vehicles can legally run those plates. However they forgot to 'un-link' this statement once the rolling road was re-established by the Government, hence the confusion. |

If it was a '76 I'd have said that's a bit harsh, but a '74? Really? IMHO it's really not worth the hassle unless you really are digging the scene points:
"Gunswick - I recently had a 1973 Cortina, I had old style black plates on it. I got a written warning in the post from the cops after it was spotted "illegally displaying non-compliant number plates on a public road" and that car was litterally 4 months out of the legal time scale for the black traditional plates. The notice I got stated than any new plates I got for the car must comply blah blah blah. They treatened me with a fine and confiscation of the vehicle and compulsory re-registration on a Q plate of all things! SO I bought lovely set of replica 1973-issue yellow & whites but as of November making and selling those plates becomes illegal." |

*UPDATE* - Further clarification has been provided by the DVLA which confirms that any vehicle that qualifies for Historic VED may run Silver/White on Black number plates. The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 are slightly ambiguous because of the Titling of the relevant section, however; www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2001/561/regulation/18/made"Saving for vehicles constructed before 1st January 1973
18. For the purposes of these Regulations a vehicle which was first registered on or after 1st January 1973 shall be treated as if it was first registered before that date if—
(a)it is an exempt vehicle for the purposes of paragraph 1A(1) of Schedule 2 to the Act(1), or
(b)not being such a vehicle, it was constructed before 1st January 1973.""The Act" it refers to is the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, of which the relevant section determines which vehicles are considered 'exempt'. www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1994/22/contents" (1)Subject to sub-paragraph (2), a vehicle is an exempt vehicle at any time if it was constructed before 1st January 1973." Note that the release shows 1973 and has not yet been brought up to date to reflect the current limit of 1975. However, when you add those acts together, a vehicle is considered exempt from VED (Historical) if constructed before January 1975, and therefore under the Display of Reg Marks is considered eligable for black and silver/white plates due being registered after 1973 but within the Historical VED banding. (and breathe!) |
