Hi, I have recently acquired a Ford Escort former South African historic saloon car racer. I'm going to use it for track days. I'm struggling to identify the type of rear axle, which has a welded diff, as I want to put in an LSD (car is road legal). Can anyone help, the casing is accessed from the rear like an Atlas but the cover is like a 50p in shape. It has disc brakes as well. Can anyone help? Cheers Chris

The atlas was fitted to Capris... depending on which model capri there are different widths.. 48" is a baby atlas, 50" on a mk1 i think and 52" on mk2/3. 52" is the right width for a mk1/2 escoprt with arches. if you get one off a 2.8i special or a brooklands 280 they come with an LSD in them. i think the baby axles are specially made rather than standard equipment on anything. 48" is the size you want for an unarched escort... Also, take a look here ... www.tickover.co.uk/shop/contents/en-uk/d288.html

/\/\ Nicely copyed from turbosport /\/\ but it's still NOT an atlas ! If you read a few posts down you'd see early german built escorts used the (baby) atlas as well, rare but they do turn up, not so much nowdays hense they have drifted into "myth" status but they are out there. That's the trouble with ciopying, make sure what you copy is correct

Thanks everyone, it is after all a BW Johannesburg M68 axle (finally got under the car to read what's on the diff - a chapping when its lowered by about 4 inches).
Next problem is where to get an LSD for it as its a welded 3.89 in there and doesn't like sharp corners, Ok for track but this is road legal as well and I live off a roundabout.
Any advice on what LSD? other than Nissan Skyline as on Turbopost.
Cheers Chris

Just run the welder
|
|
Almost on the road: b11 sunny breadvan, e36 tds, 325i skidcar,
nearly there: ford f250 tathauler, suzuki alto, u11 bluey
not for a while: ford pop, 32 rails,
not in this lifetime: ruby, '29 hillman
''unfortanatly I'm quite old and scruffy and in need of some loving. my drive shaft needs a new boot....''

Why would he need to re weld anything? The diff is welded, just leave it in there

If it was mine I think I would be tempted to change the axle to an English or atlas axle you will have a much better selection of diffs half shafts bearings seals all easily obtained

Thanks for further advice. Changing the axle will be a pain as its a 4 link axle, connected to the roll cage, with rear discs and pan hard rod. I think its easier to replace the diff but accept the seals and bearings might pose a problem. Has anyone got experience with living with a welded diff on a car driven on the road as well as track? It crabs round the roundabout outside my house, not sure what damage its doing to the tyres yet or strain on the half-shafts? but as this car was circuit racing in SA I sort of assume its quite strong.

The diff is welded, just leave it in there sorry when you said "run the welder" i thought you ment turn the welder on and weld the diff, my mistake i see you ment just drive with the welded diff Somewhere like turbosports or oldskoolford might be a good place to start, they are used to escort stuff on there and pretty sure there a couple of peeps from SA on there?

Indeed, I was thinking about this today, and realised what I'd said could be taken that way. 'Run a welder' has I think come from the drifting side of things Sorry for the confusion, carry on!

I had a bmw with a welded diff years ago it crabbed round tight corners and sounded like something was going to break when pulling out my drive, it was extremely tail happy especially in the wet so go steady lol
