Another Porsche 944 project for the RR community to read about, but mine will be very different to the others.
I have bought a 1986 (are all the project cars on here from that year?) 944 that is going to be running a tasty V8 up front, attached to Porsche running gear via some trick parts produced a number of years ago. I've always hankered after a 944 from when they were new and I was a kid. My biggest issue is that I'm really not a fan of 4 cylinder engines, I'm much more of a V8 fan having owned or still owning a few in my time.
The car came with a 924 donor that was already fitted with the running gear. It was very tired and almost completely stripped out, but it ran and moved under its own steam. If anyone is interested I can detail more about this car, the conversion it underwent and a bit of its life story having emigrated to Australia with its then owner and then back again to the UK. Somebody one loved and cherished this car; a small fortune was spent once upon a time.
The cars were delivered just before the last Bank Holiday weekend. I'd seen photos and videos, but had never viewed them before parting with my cash...
I set to work assessing, photographing and labelling a few things before getting stuck in to stripping the 924 of its last remaining goodies. My wife is so far wholly unimpressed with the purchase and I made a deal that the shell would be stripped and gone within 3 days. Thankfully the weather was great.
Stripped!
A few nice morsels liberated:
Engine on a shiny new stand ready to be stripped and inspected, then cleaned and essentials replaced
And placed next to its new home
The engine is a 4.1 litre with big valve heads and a 4-barrel carb, built by Rovertec/V8 developments. I have receipts for it and rolling road figures from a while back. It doesn't make loads more power than a later 944 turbo, but the delivery will be very different. As the car is fairly old and a little tired it is perfect for my intended track car use. I will strip out as much weight as I can from the 944 to aid the performance. Once it has a new heart I will next be concentrating on suspension and brakes (new and upgraded all round), followed by cosmetics to make it look a little smarter.
The 944 engine is next to come out, I can then assess what to do next and get on with cleaning everything up before anything goes back into the car.
