There has been a huge retrospective of classics being recreated in modern versions. Thought it could be fun to have a thread about them. This is what started me thinking about them, spotted at Cars and Coffee this weekend. The original funky chicken... The 2016 reimagining... Good or bad thing? What have you seen?

I don't dislike that but as the late model Camaro is loosely copied from the 67-69 model it would make more sense if that "Pontiac" tribute replicated the first gen Firebird. (if that makes sense?)

Is that someone's own imagining as opposed to an actual factory product? I understand that these are more concepts than actual "versions" but in my eyes most cars that come into production now carry over design details from older models, just not necessarily as eye catching as a flaming chicken (see golfs) What I do like is the push to make new cars take design elements more strongly so rather than using the badge (cough mini!!!!) they are actually new versions of the old car, here are my favourites from the past few years. Nissan IDX, failed concept which was a real shame, it had the under pinnings to become something great much like the BRZ,GT-86 Datsun 510 BMW have been quite good at this of late... 2002 3.0 CSL Just a shame none of these are likely to hit production, though realistically you could say the new M2 is the spiritual successor to the 2002 turbo just without the funky graphics. To add, Alpina E9 and Alpina B7

Hi, For me it's all a bit hit and miss. The 'Bini' apart from the size of it takes a lot of the overall profile of the original so that from a distance it can be recognised for what it is. The same for the VW Beetle. However those examples from BMW the 2002 and the CSL look nothing like their supposed ancestor, apart from the stylised grille and the BMW badge nailed on the front bear no other styling cues. In fact I would wager that without them you would be hard pressed to differentiate from other modern cars what make it was.

I found it quite amusing (or shocking) that FIAT decided that in 2016 they can't do better stylingwise then what they were doing in 1966...

I'm still sad Nissan decided not to make the idx, but were happy to build the leaf I wouldn't have been able to afford a idx but I would have found a way to own one lol.

I found it quite amusing (or shocking) that FIAT decided that in 2016 they can't do better stylingwise then what they were doing in 1966... The 500, Beetle and Mini (not so much now) are the only re-imagined cars that actually get it though. If they wernt all painfully dull (not that the originals were actually that great) they would be cool, with the same amount of time as the originals they may well be. But they are an updated version of the original. Not just a new car with an old name. The IDx is nothing like a 510. I'm sorry but other than the Datsun paint job theres no 510 in it. BMW seriously have no understanding of re-imagining, none of their concepts imbue that old styling, they look like every other thing they make. That seems to be a theme with manufacturers, they go 'Look! Its a new car but we stuck an old name on it so its totally a throw-back yeah?!". No, its not. Id rather if they had no intentions of immitating the old design they just gave a nod, like the AE86/GT86. The two cars are nothing alike and Toyota know it. They are different mind sets and different designs with a nice nod to what set it off. The closest you get is the yank offerings, but thats because they are not re-imagined they have just actually been producing the same bloody cars for 50 years: Except the new charger... that looks like curse word

Those saying the BMW's look nothing like the older ones, look at the details on all of them... BMW is one of the few manufacturers that have kept their brand image for decades, instantly recognisable as a BMW even without badges. This particular one, window shape, angled back sharknose with big lip, spoilers, fins on the wings, twin kidneys and lights, badge position behind window, grille on the wings, this is without doubt, unquestionably a hommage to the CSL. You'd be hard pushed to think otherwise. Of course they don't look EXACTLY the same as that defeats the point of progress. The 2002, indicators above the single headlights, twin kidneys with wide grille surrounding lights, wider than standard arches, square tail lights, window shape, badge positon to the right of the rear plate with long thin spoiler across the top of the boot, imposing front lip, turbo engine, in my eyes it couldn't be much closer. The IDX whilst harder to see as its a strong concept car, the profile of the lights and how they join the thin grille line matches up with the standard grille on a 510, whilst they added in a newer feature from Nissan family cars in the centre to keep the brand family image (see where this is going) The overall boxy design with short tail, the fact that everyone and their dog fits bolt on overfenders to 510s hence the Nismo concept has the bolt holes, the large tongue again a modern take on an old modification, I'm not going to point all the details out, but they are there, look closer. Whilst I don't really like the modern countryman or much of the range because they aren't small cars anymore which is something the 500 does well, they still have a few of the original touches looking back. The chrome around the lights, the "seam" line in front of the door, chrome door handles amongst other larger details in the interior. The placement of the original indicators on the classic are now foglights due to regulations. This one is a harder push to see due to the fact the original car has wood framework. I like that "new" designs aren't completely new, I kind of look like my grandparents too I love concept cars, much more than the cars that actually get made these days which is a shame as there is so much potential.

Whilst not particularly fast, I appreciate that Morgan have created yet another modern classic with their EV adapting their three wheeler design. Bronco and fan rendering from fan forum for 2020 design

I thought the L322 Range Rover was quite a tidy, and indeed stylish modernisation of the original -more so the 4 door- shape, even though it was somewhat larger and rounded.
The current Range Rover Sport is also a reasonable update on the 4 door classic, and whilst I'm not a great fan of the shape of the L405, all the newer models of Range Rover can quite easily be identified as such.

Is that someone's own imagining as opposed to an actual factory product? The Trans Am is made by a company called Trans Am Worldwide. They also do a retro GTO Judge. www.transamworldwide.com/

I'm unsure if I'd have one myself but I can see the appeal, they don't look all that bad really.
