I bought a mk4 Escort Parcel shelf (with speakers) so i didnt have to cut up my mk3 Shelf... didnt realise the mk4 shelf is a couple cm shorter than the mk3!!!! it also for some reason hangs lower on the rubber straps. Like a fool i just thought they would be the same because, they look identical! I was thinking of buying the mk4 sides but these are riveted to the car... it feels like a simple task that has become a nightmare. My main question is: has anyone had this problem before? what did you do? anyone back in the day upgrade these mk3 parts to mk4... i don't want to buy more mk4 parts and realise it wont work. In the unlikely event someone had a mk3 shelf they wanted to swap or something i'm all ears too Just trying to keep the original shelf mint. Also if anyone was to have a good Pioneer Ts-g1315 speaker... I'm all ears too (one of these is a bit blown)

If it were me I'd make a parcel shelf from MDF in your position and strengthen it and carpet it:). OTOH I would just put the Mk3 shelf in and leave the rear speakers. If you want to do something with the system upgrade your fronts, maybe add an amp in there and put a sub in the rear. Completely non intrusive and requires no cutting up. Simple . Escort speakers up front are also in a very good location as standard.

Another option is You could buy a mk4 escort to go with your shelf and sell me the mk3 escort

But without trying to be "that guy", I wonder if the car in question is a Mk3. It had the wraparound gutters at the rear which AFAIK were only on the Series 1 RSTs and MkIV Escorts, unless I am missing something .

I did have some speakers up front in the plastic mk3 speaker grills by your feet, with tweeters in the dash. But the mid range speakers rattled a lot as theres not a lot of room in the grills and i didnt want to have to make wooden surround for down there so, when this came up for cheap i thought i was sorted. theres a lot more bass from these too. Could go down the mdf root i guess, although i might try and alter this a bit more first. I was going to buy other door cards and put them in the doors but with it being a ford.. all this stuff is a fortune. Theres is a 300w amp hidden behind the glove box which makes these pioneers sound pretty good. It is indeed a mk3 popular someone would have had to have gone to some lengths to fake this 1.1 popular. I know what you mean about the roof guttering though ChasR but, this A Reg mk3 seems to have the same guttering doesnt it?

Failing that, some sound deadening and new speakers will work wonders . And the sub will provide you much needed bass and be easier to remove than a parcel shelf IME ; you can even get quick connectors to make life easier . That is interesting. Maybe the change happened around 84 'ish' with the gutter rails.

The plastic shelf supports are completely different shape between the Mk3 and 4. You need the same setup all round if doing changes
