Edit: Now on ebay, no reserve: here
I bought this MX5 around 6 months ago as an LPG powered daily to chew up miles on the A27 and be much more fun to drive and own than anything modern and diesel. It's served its purpose well, but I'm getting married and will be away for the whole of the summer period so it won't be used, and I'll probably be getting something more reliable / less fun when I get back. It doesn't have much MOT left and will need some work to get through.
I'll be honest, if this wasn't on LPG, it'd be a breaker, but as it runs nicely on gas, it's worth saving.
I like it when sellers list all a car's faults up front when I'm buying, so I like to do the same thing back, especially to this community, so:
Good points:
- LPG runs smooth as anything, switch over from petrol hard to notice. Test drivers can test on both petrol and LPG as there's a bit of gas left in the tank.
- LPG tank doesn't take up the whole of the boot, there's space for a few bags here and there.
- Interior in pretty okay condition apart from the usual driver's seat wear, nice nardi wooden steering wheel
- Car handles really well
- Brakes are good
- Car is taxed and insured and MOT'd until September, so can be legally test driven, and driven away once bought.
- Working era correct stereo included (kenwood)
- Nice model, with tan leather and LSD
- Chrome bootrack
Bad points:
- Paintwork is bad, flaking lacquer on multiple panels, plenty of scratches too.
- It needs welding of sills on one side (other side seems to have been done) I've had a quote for £400 to sort for MOT from themx5restorer in east sussex, a bunch of guy's I've trusted with my more cherished MX5 for years. I even have this booked in still if the buyer wants to use the same slot (booked in early September)
-Alternator a bit flakey - Once in pouring rain with lights and wipers and heaters on, the battery konked out - battery has since been replaced, but I'd urge buyers to be wary and keep an eye on voltages before sorting this.
- Car has overheated once from I think a leaky radiator - but no signs of head gasket failure whatsoever, I've just kept the rad topped up since and had no trouble
- Exhaust quite raspy, probably the cat
- Tyres pretty shagged, but legal (2x used on recent track day (not on this car) and 1x has a slow puncture)
- Roof quite stiff and has a taped up tear in the back.
Optional extras:
Full set of 15x7 et24 BBS wheels off an e30, suit MX5s perfectly and these come with mazda centrecaps too. All four wrapped in less than 500 mile fresh yokohama parada spec 2 tyres. I would keep these for my mk2, but would let them go for an extra £400 (£200 tyres, £150 common as muck wheels, £50 set of rare centrecaps).
Matching BRG hard top, in pretty bad paint condition but waterproof and quiet. £200
