A real barn find well shed, but what is best for it. I have treated it for woodworm. It’s all working including the pedals and bell. (As tested by my youngest) Repainting it is going to destroy it, could I tee cut the paint then lacquer it or is that going detract from its original state. I’m at a loss with this any one have any ideas?

will it be for sale? what age is it aimed at? I would guess ages 4 to 6 it won't be for sale whilst the youngest still fits in but want to preserve it. The boiler is made of metal and rust is coming through. Not holed just surface rust but would like to stop it getting worse. Even painting the wheels would lose some of its patina. I want it to be preserved but still used if that makes sense.

makes perfect sense and that's what i would do / that's what i would do if it was for sale for my train-mad 3 year old! have a look at grenade's truck thread - i think he discusses preserving patina with clear coat lacquer.

Is it printed tinplate? My father collects tin toys and uses household pledge, brings them up to a real shine.

On the thread with antique jacks, didn't the author use linseed oil? I'm sure he said it preserved the patina and protected them from further corrosion, not that I have ever used it myself!

Linseed oil can go rancid if it's allowed to build up through a few coats. I suppose it could go all sticky and manky. I know that boiled linseed oil is used on decks of boats to prevent the rancid thing, might be worth a shot. I think I'd use some ACF50 on a cloth.

Like the idea of pledge and ACF50, does the ACF50 discolour the rust? Just remember kurust used to turn the rust purple.

Lovely piece.
I vote for maximum maintenance of patina and look.
Treat for borer beetle or woodworm if needed but remember it then becomes a risk to kids.
Maybe contact a restorer once you have more info and Google for advice.

Before you do anything else, it'll need kitting out with TPWS, possibly ATP, ATS, ATC, Cadbury's Dairy Milk and Cab Secure Radio. Then the whole thing will need to be examined, and approved, by Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate and if you think the BIVA boys are bad, wait 'til you meet this lot.
In the meantime, I love that!

We can drop atp and cab secure - GSMR and potentially ECTS is the order of the day, make sure the OTMR has 9 million channels, all the air tanks are in date, the axles have been ultrasonic scanned...

I've just been looking at this, the construction of it is simple making a replica could be done in a day. The chassis is all wood the front and rear axle just bolts onto this. If you can find an old peal car, and something to use as a boiler then rest is just cutting ply. I can take some detailed pictures if you want.

True. I'm getting too used to lines where cab secure means the station staff only hands one bit of paper to the driver as a token. Tallmatt and GeorgeB I have no idea on any of those acronyms! I'll let you into a secret; nor do I. But, as a very expensive consultant, you're expected to trot these things out from time to time! As the world famous Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus once said, for some reason, "In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king" But never mind all that. Where are you with the train? I think it's brilliant. If my parents had given me something like that, I'd probably be an accountant or something else 'respectable' by now.

Tallmatt and GeorgeB I have no idea on any of those acronyms! As a lowly shop floor minion I have to know the ones George makes up too! GSMR - the new type cab radio, much like a mobile phone and in use across Europe ECTS - the new fancy signal system that shows the driver in the cab what he should do instead of actual signals - eventually the system will be driverless allowing trains to work with less headway between them. ATP - one of the best train fitted safety systems ever, user data allows the system to predict the speed the train has to do to prevent it passing a red signal. There's only ever been one or two accidents caused by the system, however it's an expensive system so we stopped fitting it. Aws/twps - the budget version of atp, it lets you go through red signals before it stops you and has been overridden a lot.

Aws/twps - the budget version of atp, it lets you go through red signals before it stops you and has been overridden a lot. That's why life's easy here:- GSM-R; a walkie talkie ETCS; paper token or, in single line section, a man with flags. The green of which is an identical match with the foliage against which it is waved. ATP; no need, no red signals! AWS/TWPS; see ATP If a driver is determined, his progress will automatically be curtailed (at least once a month) by a system that's quite widespread in Asia.
