Due to slight meltdown of vehicles - they've all stopped at once, all the old curse word on that list below! - I've been forced to get the Tigra ready for action. I couldn't get it running and it got too blimey cold so Englebert is collecting it tomorrow - the same guy who has the never ending enigma that is my merde R21 in his workshop. It's the Bermuda Triangle! I cleaned it.. well, brushed off all the dust, fitted the original side skirts, did all the little jobs like original orange side repeaters to replace the LED curse word non-working 'tuning' curse word ( ah the small things haha ), fitted the wheels and lowered it down. The wife needs this next week so let's hope it doesn't turn into another huge saga! Moderate saga?

So Tüv tomorrow and V6 swap Sunday morning? Leaves Sunday afternoon for a wee test ride to make sure everything works for her Monday morning.

Ha yes, thanks melle and georgeb.. I did get suddenly motivated, had to, to stay warm in the f-f-f-f-reezin barn. And fiddling with all the little clips to apply the side skirts with thick gloves on. The shimmering V6 flickers like a receding mirage as I contemplate a sea of undriveable (s)curse word in the barn.. currently walking about. Englebert came today prompt at 10.15 and collected the Tigra which I had managed to push out of the barn with a raging hangover from Xmas drinks last night, building little ramps out of wood to get it out as it's actually quite low. I thought about taking a photo, it looked nice in the morning sun with heavy frost everywhere but I felt like total dog product. He asked me a few questions about the engine swap and why wouldn't it start, then immediately said : Anti-theft system. I said ' How could it be that easy?' Haha. Should've got a pic of him in his old school 'Bosch' puffa jacket that probably came free with a diagnostic machine or the Bosch rep gave him for xmas '98

Just in time for Christmas - the Tigra is freed onto the road. The wife is well happy she's got her car now. It wasn't starting because the injectors in the 'new' plant were glued shut. I had only checked fuel at the rail. So fitted the old injectors. Also needed various small items to clear the TÜV/MoT but it went through with some amusing advisories, one of which was - 'the vehicle is well used' It's actually great to drive. It's debatable whether it's a 'sports car' or just a hairdresser's poodle but driving it reminds me of a friends Mk 1 Sprite that I drove in the 80s : it's low and tight and feels fast enough. The engine is a real surprise. Though it's just a 1.4 90hp plant it feels and sounds right. It starts up with a pleasant rorty rumble and produces a great tone on the road especially when it hits the higher revs and the 16v head really brings it alive. The Sparco strap along with the arrow that points to it are going along ( edit : they're staying. The wife likes) with the alien wing mirrors. Loving the levver seat.

Thanks fellas. I'm actually quite surprised it's done and didn't languish too long in the barn.
Tomorrow going up to Stuttgart on the afore-mentioned deregulated autobahn. Tigra's supposed to be good for 203 kmph (126mph).. probably start breaking up at those speeds! I'll report back. Going to inspect something relating to the next evolution for the hairdresser's coupe.

None of the three, sleek, silvery vehicles in this autobahn parking area can move under their own power mothership arrives On route to the in-laws with my son - his first ride in the Tigra - came out on the autobahn, going up through the gears, selected the fifth and - slight banging noise - no drive. Gearbox has gone on holiday. Checked what I could wearing my best clothes : linkage is still live and intact, gear stick feels normal. Got lugged home burning up that autobahn on the yellow mothership at 80 kmph on Boxing day. I really enjoyed the two days driving it. Wife was meant to be driving to work with it tomorrow. Private investigations to follow.

Thanks mattiwagon Ha yes indeed. I'm off to Stuttgart tomorrow to look at a possible donor with the six cylinders in a V formation.

Was going to wish you luck for inevitable 'teething' problems after getting it back on the road, but didn't want to jinx it.. A frustrating & very unexpected development. Hope its silly easy like a drive-shaft rather than g.box (though wouldn't expect that). G.box still sounds easy though after all the work that has already gone in to the car, so glad the enthusiasm hasn't died yet.

None of the three, sleek, silvery vehicles in this autobahn parking area can move under their own power This made me laugh.... Sorry for your (continuing) problems though - hope it's a simple fix - clutch maybe? Can't help thinking that a V6 conversion might be an extreme reaction to this little set-back Nick

sorry to hear about your troubles, hope you get it fixed.
I noticed the KN plates on your cars - I lived in Konstanz from '99-'08.

Thanks for all the replies fellas.. helps to keep morale up. vitesseefi glad it made you laugh and I think you might be right with the clutch. I didn't fit a new clutch as the one on the donor engine had - allegedly - less than 5000 kms on it. It looked hardly worn and was an Opel/Valeo part. The V6 conversion will happen but not this week ( see below) The ever-ready Engelbert had a quick sit in the Tigra, felt the clutch pedal and moved the gear-stick and immediately pronounced clutch failure. Let's see if he's right.. I've got to repeat some of that journey into the innards again. A good days work I suppose? npp : yes, I live in the northern part of the Konstanz Landkreis where the Black Forest starts. What were you doing here? It's normally either a German wife or a contract with one of the aerospace/munitions companies. 79cord No worries. Thanks for the support. I worked out a solution to the current family transport issue ( we don't have any roadworthy vehicle we can all fit in) while moving towards tuning objectives. Wife doesn't think it's that good of course! The 3.0 V6 was also stuck in what is regarded as a bit of a turkey of an MPV - The Opel Sintra - Under 'reliability' : 'This model proved unreliable' haha.. but 200bhp in a family bus? So.. I started looking despite Engelbert telling me it was the worst Opel ever made - 'a total catastrophe.' Worth getting get one just to wind him up. When I told him that the engine was destined for the Tigra he gave me a look of pity and asked me if I didn't have better things to do. I said - we English have a tradition of putting big engines in small cars ( thinking of Ken Costello at that moment). The Sintras that have survived can't all be turkeys? How did they manage to clock up over 200k Kms and make it to old age? So I went to Stuttgart today to have a look at one - eight months ticket, seven seats, supposed service history. What a waste of time! ( picture is from seller's ad.you can see how long he's had it up for sale with summer in the background!) When I got there he said his wife couldn't find the service history.. ahem. I lifted the oil filler cap to be greeted with half a jar of mayonnaise whereupon I shook his hand and said bye-bye. The price suddenly dropped from €1000 to €200. But I saw and heard an X30XE running with my own eyes and ears and... I'm addicted. Two more V6 Sintras are lined up for viewing. I can live with interior wear and tear but the engine has got to be the best I can find with service history and cam-belt intervals. Tank around in an over-powered turkey with the whole family comfortably seated ( nice spongy chairs) til it stuffs then remove the plant and build it up for Tony the Tigra. The finished engine, due to space and fwd requirements will be made up of three different plants.

I lived in Allmannsdorf but we explored the whole area around the eastern half of the lake on foot and bicycle.

Did you get yourself a Sheffield girl then npp ? One of my good mates comes from Sheff and I always found the womenfolk quite... er.... strident. You can always run away into the glorious natural environment of The Peak District if you need some space. Apologies to any female residents of Sheffield, I obviously met the wrong ones!
