A customer of mine who does an awful lot of bespoke automotive/bike engineering made himself a power vice because the amount of time he's working on odd shapes and needing to re-position them in the vice means that ideally 3-4 hands are a necessity. It needed to be simple and effective and this is what we came up with.
Kit of parts
2 V-pulleys & belt
Parvalux 12V DC worm geared motor
Old 12V battery
Foot operated changeover switch
Old vice
Some odds 'n sods
Assemble all this and adjust v-belt centres so it can slip and doesn't crush delicate parts. If you need greater holding force you just nip up the vice with a bar after the part is first held.
He reckons it's revolutionised his working times.
