Hi, good people of Retroland. I'm hoping someone here, with knowledge, can help me out, with my Rover. ive acquired this from my elderly mum - but it's a beauty, & too good for me not to use myself. I've unearthed a second key & immobiliser fob. After replacing the battery & going on a forum, to find out the way to re-synchronise the fob, I'm still having no luck, with it unlocking the car. Do you think I have a duff fob ? On to the second question. These are the keys. Have I got two starting keys, or just one starter & one unlocker ? Does the non flexi key lack a transponder ? The solid key will start the engine - but only with the original (Rover badged) key, in close proximity to it. It's ability to start it is also not reliable. Sometimes it won't even crank the engine. I'm hoping that there's some clever git out there, who may shed some light on my probs.

my brother in law had one and the engine went so it sat for a month or so with the battery out, after fitting the replacement engine we could not get it to start, in the end we had to send the immobilizer module (behind the dash) away to be re-programmed, if i remember correctly they basically turned it off so it never worked.

Perhaps the solid key is a valet key? Although that wouldn't really help them to bring the car back to you!
I reprogrammed the fob on an 800 earlier this year, it took a few goes though.

There is no transponder in those keys, as long as they turn in the barrel they are ok. To initialize an old remote as long as it is the correct remote, (with new batteries)press the unlock button about 10 times standing at the drivers door aiming through the window, if you are lucky it will work but this is usually only if it had a battery change or was working very recently. It is worth popping them open and checking the buttons without the casing, you can press the little microswitches and check the condition. Is the light flashing on the dash, if its flashing its imobilized/alarm armed, if it stops flashing when you operate the remote then the remote is working. If you have the bookpack look for the KAC number and instructions, this is mainly if you have no remotes and stuck in the middle of nowhere it will over ride the imobilizer and start the car. A bit rushed and jumbled but give it a try, good luck

I've had a bunch of Rovers and now ZRs. As OEM the same key works both the door and ignition, so if they are different profile, at some point someone has swapped a lock.
As for resynching the fob, sorry nothing to add other than have a good search on the Rover/MG forums.
