Yep, I'd agree with that. I did find the service manual for the zf 5hp19 transmission a while back and saw there was a very specific procedure for refilling the box to the right level. As well as seeng good old ed China change the oil on a tiptronic Porsche 911 which uses the same box.
My 530i has only done 72k so I think it should be ok, I gather it's higher mileage auto boxes that people tend to say leave alone if they've never had a change.

I bought mine with 94K - nothing in the considerable service history indicated it had had any changes - I changed it because my fundamental "Mantra" is that Oil keeps the moving parts apart - when the oil is knackered the parts wear against each other - then you have problems I'd rather change oils every 3000 miles than 15,000 and have to change an engine at 100,000

Anyway back to E38 - next job for mine is replacement of every arm, bush and joint in the suspension set up..... The 60 mph "shimmey" was only just noticeable when I bought it - of course I reverted to 16 inch wheels because the 18's needed a refurb and the tyres were near the end of their life and never saw it again till I put the 18's back on - now it's horrid The parts from BMW would have been £995 with a 10% discount but then the 20% VAT bounces the bill to well over that - now I'd pay that to keep the car on the road if it was the only alternative - I know this is crazy to some of my white goods car owning friends - the car is probably only worth £1500 at best but that doesn't mean it's not worth more to me. I started searching for alternatives to the BMW parts - even bought a couple of arms from a local parts supplier but returned them unused - cheap "Chinese curse word" looked like they would solve the problem for 12 mths at best. In the end I bought all the parts from a German "aftermarket" company - for £300 plus £40 shipping All the parts have die grinder marks where the BMW logos have been ground off - some had been missed I've always felt that a thread on my E38 wouldn't really fit in on here as it was too new - when I got it in 2006 it was definately too new for here - now maybe it sits on the edge of what's acceptable - I certainly wouldn't call it retro in any shape or form but I do think it has a timeless look and the last of the designs before "Bangle" got involved. What do people think?

.....I gather it's higher mileage auto boxes that people tend to say leave alone if they've never had a change. My old 535i had covered 170-odd thousand miles with no record of ever having fresh oil in the gearbox when I had it changed and the difference was night and day, much smoother changes and a lot less slip.

And that's a very key point If the box has "issues" a fluid and filter change aren't going to fix it - they might put off the inevitable but not for long If the box has no issues then a fluid and filter change can extend the lifetime The gearbox manufactures recommended interval for fluid and filter change on the box is 10 years or 100,000 miles BMW say "sealed for life" The reason for the difference is BMW regard the lifetime of the car to be same as lifetime of the box 10 years or 100,000 miles - they want people to change their cars and buy new ones
