Well the dutch version of the rdw site shows this: Judgement on less than 5 aspects (no idea what the aspects are )€ 27,00 Judgement on 5 to 9 aspects (apparently when the car is 30 years or older) € 55,00 Vehicle identification (looking at the badge on the back? ) € 56,00 Adding vehicle to license register € 39,00 Putting vehicle in your name € 9,91 MOT € 32,00 On top of that you may need to pay some taxes but for older cars that's usually 0 so nothing to worry about there. All in all i think you need to count on around € 160 to get the vehicle on a dutch plate. Of course you need to make sure it's actually accepted by modifying the mirrors/headlights.

By the way, regarding car forums, i'm not aware of a big 'general' forum like RR but there are a lot of brand/model specific forums, some with more activity than others. Especially the VAG scene is well represented in NL.

An importcheck is about 100 euro i believe in total, they check the basic condition of the car, lights, brakes and paperwork. I don't know for sure if it's also for UK cars, but on most european countries, if the MoT (called APK overhere) is valid for more then 6 months, you get the same expiry date overhere, a free MoT basicly. If it doesn't have MoT i'd advise against taking the test at the RDW as they are way more strict then the normal APK stations. They failed my mates car on misaligned lights and wouldn't let us adjust them with a screwdriver i allready had in my hand. On top of that, you have to pay importtaxes, based on emissions and age if it's a modern car (goes down every year the car is older) or new price and age if it's a pre 2001 (i think??) car. The tax is 45,2% (called BPM) on new cars and goes down with 10% each year untill the car is 9 years old and then 0,0382 (or something stupid like that) each month. Which means a car about 20ish years old is 'tax free' to import. And i have bought from Jetcars, it's a fun place to shop for cars, if you're in to the car you're buying there, it's a great place to get a bargain, but don't expect a nice car for a low price I bought a cheap car there and allready sold some parts of it on the way home for a profit

I currently live in Enschede but will be moving somewhere in the next couple of months to Rotterdam when my house is finished. So I don't know what you're planning timewise but we might be able to meet some day. I actually own 3 (classic/youngtimer) cars but they are strewn across the country and not road worthy I do have motorcycles if you fancy those

I'm planning to move there at the start of February. I'll be working in a hostel for board etc till I get work all my papers and a flat sorted. Then probably stay in Rotterdam for 2 years. Then either stay or move to den Bosch as she is registered to the woonservice there Would love a bike but never had one. I keep on seeing tomos scooters and want one haha. 3 can't be bad. What do you have I have 2 Subaru XTs and a Citroen DS, none of them road worthy at the moment but that's a matter of time, next spring I should have the Citroen up and running. I don't know what field of work you're in, but Rotterdam is a big city with lots of possibilities, so you should be able to find something

I'm Dutch and have lived in several countries (currently England + Ireland). In general people in NL speak English, but if I where you I would try and learn the language asap. I've lived in Denmark for about 4 years and I found speaking Danish opened many doors, both in work and elsewhere. Learning a new language was fun too and I got to know quite a few nice people from all over the globe in language class.
NL is an OK car country: road tax and insurance are reasonable, APK is fair and rules on modifications are very relaxed compared to other countries I've lived in. I still have two cars on Dutch plates in my workshop in Groningen.

One downside to living in Rotterdam, the city is emissions restricted, this means that you are not allowed to drive petrol cars build before 1992 or diesels before 2000 in the city centre (which is otherwise very accessible for cars!). Classic cars aging 40+ years are allowed though.

Other nice place near 's Hertogenbosch is classic park in boxtel (www.classicpark.com) road tax is quite steep but MOT rules are not too strict. generally there is no place in Europe where budget motoring is as cheap as the UK, certainly not in NL. best place for cheap cars currently is various Facebook groups for cheap cars as marktplaats is charging a fee for car adverts, other website that has quite a few cheap cars is www.autoscout24.nl as it offers free advertising as well.

DO you know about Volks Style Base - just over into Germany put a big watercooled VW show on an old military airport. www.volkstylebase.com/I'm more of an air-cooled VW / yank guy, even though we have a mk2 golf gti, so don't do many of the shows for later VW stuff.

Good to hear you've settled (for now) then! How's the dutch coming along? I still live in Rotterdam, sadly still haven't had a chance to pick up my cars from storage, but hopefully soon.
The milieuzone in rotterdam actually changed recently, only diesels of a certain age are restricted (not allowed in the citycentre). Hopefully it'll stay this way!
