Hi guys and gals - I have had an illogical knee jerk reaction which means I now have no reason to have a 5 seater, sensible fast cruiser - and instead want something a bit silly and maybe a tad impractical.
It has to be useable every day and not mental money to run - I'm thinking Alfa GTV, BMW Coupe, MX-5 - that kind of stuff - but try me my tastes are pretty eclectic and I've driven plenty of stupid stuff daily before. I guess the Volvo is worth about £1000-£1250 as a guideline - but we all know how swaps work, if I'm happy with your car and you're happy with mine I'm not too hung up on the values. Here's a description of the beast:
Welcome to the sale of my Scarab Green Volvo S60 D5 Saloon.
This particular example is MOT’d – until June 2017 and will make someone a great mile muncher happy to sit at very illegal speeds all day long and still combine 51mpg.
You’re looking at genesis – the one that began the fast diesel trend that has been raging for the last 16years. These were hugely popular with the Police force as their fast response vehicles due to their build quality, reliability, speed and economy. 3rd gear acceleration in these things is truly phenomenal!
EQUIPMENT
This D5 comes very well specified with Electric Windows, 1 touch closing on windows, Electric glass sunroof with 1 touch closure, electric heated mirrors, electric folding mirrors, electric heated seats, leather upholstery, original floor mats, switchable movement sensors, rear parking sensors, climate control, the frankly incredible Volvo 4-CD Dolby/3 channel 7-speaker sound system – it is a match for any modern Harman Kardon/Bowers Wilkins system, tilt/reach adjustable steering wheel, Cruise control, steering wheel audio/cruise control, day running lights, front fog lights
EXTERIOR
This D5 is finished in not the most common of Volvo colours – but one that I like a lot. Its paint code 447 – Scarab Green Pearl – and it looks great polished up as you can see in pictures. It’s not immaculate by any means. As to be expected with a 13 year old cars there are some age related marks and small scratches around the body but nothing that stands out without close scrutiny.
Overall it’s fairly presentable and isn’t looking shabby. There is now a small scrape on the corner of the bumper - I've lived with it for the past month, but I have a spare un-scraped bumper that will come with the car/be fitted if it's a deal breaker.
INTERIOR
The interior is in good condition with even the standard factory mats in place and in good nick. There is wear to the gear knob and some wear to the driver’s bolster – but not torn or warn through. I have been giving it some leather food over the past couple of weeks to address this so it should be nice by the time of a viewing. The rest of the interior is in good, used condition.
Everything works including the memory heated seats up front, the cruise control, the ridiculously good stereo with built in sub and amp, there are no pixelations of any screens all electrics work great with no warning lights.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
This car is mechanically excellent – the engine is torquey and boosts well holding the prescribed boost. The clutch is nice and low with no slippage regardless of conditions. There is no bearing whine or dual mass flywheel thunder which signals the DMF is on it’s way out.
Everything works as it should with no untoward noises, bangs or clunks. In terms of real world MPG – the computer quotes a combined 51.8mpg – however I think it’s being a little optimistic on that. Looking at the amount of diesel I put in and how long it lasts – I have never seen below 40mpg of in-town hooning. On a run it will run well into the 50mpg range – and I don’t generally sit below 80mph on the cruise control.
To summarise it’s very economical, and pretty fast for an old girl.
Recent Maintenance
In the past 10 months of ownership the old girl has had a decent amount of upkeep. She has under gone a full service – Oil, Oil Filter, Air filter, Coolant check, Fuel Filter, pollen filter. She has had her rear brakes rebuilt – new (not recon) callipers, new pads and discs.
She has had 4 new tyres in that time as well. Fronts were done less than 500 miles ago, rears were done in Feb – around 5000 miles ago. All are in good condition with plenty of tread as expected.
Front lower suspension arms have been replaced on both sides so it’s nice and tight in the steering department
There was a cambelt inspection at the same time as the full service – but it was found to be carried out fairly recently judging by the condition of the belt – so was left alone by my mechanic.
Bad Bits
All cars have them and this one is no exception – the a/c element of the climate control doesn’t work – I could say ‘it needs a regas’ as every single seller seems to – but that would be a lie. It has a confirmed leak in the condenser – these are between £90-130 depending on quality of part, and around 3 hours of labour to fit. It just hasn’t bothered me enough with a sunroof to get round to it.
The lid on thecentre console cup holder has come off – I still have it but have not refitted it – otherwise cups wouldn’t fit in the cupholder – so it seems a little counter productive.
Every now and then the clock on the dashboard will go mental – like the switch to change the time gets stuck, and it changes the time for 5 minutes – then it stops and you’re left with the wrong time. I don’t know how I’ve lived with this fault – but I’ve managed it.
Apart from that you have a fast, luxurious, economic cruiser which will eat up the miles with very comfy heated seats, an amazing sound system and cruise control. Great place to be.
Anyhoo pictures or it didn't happen:
