I own a mini and it's taxed I am going to let my son drive it and insure it I pay the tax on it now and I will pay the tax on it when he's driving it out of my pocket So when we transfer ownership from me to him I loose a month even though I'm paying for it It's due in January

Yup! Great system for conning the law abiding motorist.
Your son can be insured and drive it whilst it is still registered to you, so long as the insurance knows he is the main driver there's nothing wrong with the owner and driver being different. Then transfer it right at the end of the month.

You can do better than that . Once you sell the car online it will SORN it automatically. Using the green slip your son can then tax it in the new month. While it is the same as what you said there is no need to SORN it separately when the online sale service will take care of the rest.

I understood that it just went un-taxed when sold and if you need to SORN it then this has to be done separately?

You're right. My bad indeed! The new owner will SORN off the new keeper slip (the V5C/2 ?).
IME they are not too fussed about a car being untaxed for a few days. A few weeks is a different matter.

Are you actually selling/giving the car to your son? Or just allowing him the use of it?
If the last, unless the insurer penalises him for it not being registered in his name I don't see any reason to add another keeper change. The V5 doc says quite clearly on it that the registered keeper is not necessarily the owner.

Hi, The term 'Registered Keeper' is one of those innocuous phrases used by officialdom, it means someone whose is prepared to take responsibility for the vehicle. If the vehicle is involved in an incident for example the authorities will go to the RK for details of who was driving if not the RK, If they can't or won't say then guess who gets done. Something to bear in mind.
