So last year I decided to get amongst this project. I found a mobility scooter on gumtree for the princely sum of £20, which upon arrival was a little bit smaller than I wanted, but it actually turned out a bit better as it's lightness works with the engine. Stripping down the mobility scooter and a quick search on eBay led to the realisation that old people get ripped off for these.. the spares prices were through the roof. Slowly I sold all the unnecessary electrical parts and got it to the barr bones.
I really wanted it to look totally normal when it was finished, so everything had to go under the existing plastics. The plan was to have a gin bottle as a fuel tank in the basket, and a disk brake setup on the rear axle. All bodgery has led to the following pics so far. The keyways for the axle were cut manually with an angle grinder slowwwlllyyy and welded in place. The welding isn't the greatest, this is my first welding project but it's solid.
It's been running fine and drives well, however after a few runs I realised I needed some changes. The front axle was so short it was like a three wheeler and very unstable. The fuel hose needed upgrading as it could drag on the floor, and the plastics barely covered the engine.
I resolved this by putting the axle bearings on the underside of the chassis but the axle is taking me a bit longer to mount. The one disk brake is woeful so I want to update the pads at least.
Things left to do are fit the fuel tank, sort an exhaust (it's very loud with a straight pipe) and sort the brake out for it to be more powerful. Pics as it is today..
