Well folks, i've got some news about what we've done last summer Just a short story - 40 years ago, in 1977 three (pre-production) RAF-cars made a test voyage from Baltic sea (Liepaja town, Latvia) to Pacific ocean (Vladivostok city), about 13000 km in total, part of the route was on railway cars, because the was no any road at that time in Siberia in between Tynda and Khabarovsk. This summer story continued by our five rides. Three from Latvia, one from Estonia and mine. Start in Liepaja, Latvia. Another start in Riga, Latvia. Yep, Moscow. Tyumen', Ural. Close to Kranoyarsk, Khakasia All the way roads was good to excelent, even Ferrari can now cross the Russia from east to west and back. Sayano-Shushenskaya hydro power plant Ulan-Ude city Somewhere in Siberia Khabarovsk, Amur river Vladivostok, finish. That was a way to Vladivostok. Something like 13500 km. But! There was also way back, and as far as the rest of the vans, except mine was 'travelled" by the railcar in the container, i decided to came back home on my own, alone, one car-one driver... See next post))) P.S. Some more info can be found here - www.drive2.com/users/elserge/#blog and on FB page - www.facebook.com/RAF.geo.2015

Let's face participants. Number one - this ride is of 1980 year production. Totally restored by professionals, the owner Ruslans Grigorovich has his own restoration business, as well as private museum. Problems during voyage: overheating, water pump died in Siberia (repaired by the spare one). Number two - this ride is of 1986 year of production. The same owner, also restored. Factory installed propane-butane gas system. Problems during voyage: none Number three - this ride is of 1987 year of production. Private owner, restored by Ruslan Grigorovich. Problems during voyage: piston broke into 2 pieces-engine overhauling (Novgorod city), overheating, oil leakage, rear differential broke-replaced (Baikal lake) - most problematic ride After Novgorod's massacre, van caught up with us two days later, when we were on our way to Nizhny Novgorod. Number four - this ride is of 1993 year of production. Estonians started to "collect" that ride using two donor-rides in march this year, so this is not surprizingly that they didn't have time to finish by the start on 25 of May. They caught up with us in Nizhnij Novgorod, a week later. Problems during voyage: second problematic ride, a lots of small, but annoying problems, starting from electricity, wiper, door handles, etc..., to fountain of the petrol from carburettor in Omsk and disconnected brake pedal "on the fly" in Siberia. P.S. This ride was before restoration absolutely identical to mine, even curtains was the same. But they find it in Estonia, mine is Russian. Last, but not least (c) Problems during voyage: rotten tire, rear propshaft universal joint on the way back, small overheating problems.

Nice to see something different on here. Am I the only one thinking with that super high offset you could in theory get some mahoosive wheels tucked under those arches?

In theory, yes, but since the suspension was designed to be taken standard from the GAZ-24 Volga, and the RAF body is 200 mm wider ... It will be expensive and / or unreliable for long distance journeys. The suspension on this ride was taken from GAZ-3102, which is 50 mm wider than the standard GAZ-24, the wheels are also wider. This is the maximum that can be done to make the ride look original, well ... more or less)))
