If I was looking long term I'd be buying a few sub 1k Cars for a punt. 206Gti, Fiat Seicento Sporting. Ford Streetka / Sportka. Alfa 147, Stilo Abarth. Plenty of reasonable low milers at that price.
I have no storage, which kills the idea.

Thanks, lots of good suggestions, I'm thinking a Delta might be the best option, seen a few 16v integrales recently that looked ideal, although Id like to get something that is likely to increase in value its as much about spending the money wisely and getting something that I may not be able to afford in a few years.
A Cosworth was a candidate but I'm not much of a Ford fan, Id likely be too scared to own a 911 996 incase something ever went wrong with it, another 205 would be great but they are pretty small and basic, Ive had Deltas and a Beta before and loved them, Lancias are getting so rare these days...

just buy a lump of gold and you wont have to build a barn for it or just buy the car you really want and just assume thats its an investment already. Not really in the spirit of a car forum, but I would have suggested gold if I had find to a sensible suggestion. Don't underestimate the commitment needed to keep a mint classic in good order. Heated storage and gentle runs on dry days mean you need space, cash, and something else as a main car. If you trying to use it regularly, you'll enjoy it but expect the value to take a hit. ps. I got very tempted today by a Ford 100E (with 2L pinto) that a neighbour of my mate is looking to sell, so maybe I'm not the best person to give sensible advice!

I'm looking into buying a honda just now,
integra type R's are tipped to be mega investments and possibly best fwd car ever.
I'll also agree on M3's. I looked at an SMG E46 last year for 6 grand. car was mint and they aint gonna stay that price forever

I bought an e46 M3 SMG earlier this year so I hope you right, its currently in storage over the winter with my MG, Ive got a dry warehouse with plenty of space so anything I did buy would only be used summer months...

I might sound mad but a smiley face transit (1990-2000 shape). Rough ones are £150 and alright ones are £600-£700. Look at the cost of a Mk1 or Mk2 transit and make your mind up on that. I've often been told that the smiley transit is the best transit ever made and even the best van ever made so I'd believe it will go up in value but it will be a fair wait (15-20 years)..

probably depends on how long you are going to keep your purchase and how it is going to be stored-more so than make and model of car. i mean, how much does a basic but clean mini go for these days? ..something that you couldve picked up for £50 at some point. how much is a clean mk3 escort? a big purchase doesnt mean that youre going to get a big return. if youre going for profit then spread your bets maybe because youd need a crystal ball to work out what is going to be fashionable in x amount of years. with regard to special editions, sports, rs, personally i think an audi rs is going to plumet for a very long time before there is a rekindled demand for them. plan to buy something now or something in the future that will be cheaper then.. just buy a lump of gold and you wont have to build a barn for it or just buy the car you really want and just assume thats its an investment already. id like to buy a couple of e28 525s that come out on sunny days and overwinter in a warm shed I agree about spreading your bets. The word bets implies a gamble and thats exactly what this game is. Personally I'd look at cars that will become rare due to not being too many survivors left. Maybe claimed by rust and other issues. I'd look at putting, some of that money into some of these (especially run out models); Mazda MX5 MK1 Toyota MR2 MK1 BMW 325Ti (manual gearbox) Ford Puma 1.7 Thunder Peugeot 106 GTi If only I had the luxury of storage .................

Buy something you like. [2] I tend to go along with these guys with buying something you like especially if you are going to use it, even if it is only occasionally. the other valid point already mentioned is storing a car / bike / vehicle which needs thinking about. As I m currently looking for a new motor myself and seeing some crazy advertised prices on most cars but what are they actually getting price wise compared to the advertised price ?

Thirded. The Transit suggestion is a good one too. It gives you a vehicle you can use to support the rest of your fleet, rather than one that competes with them. I think the cars that make the best returns as investments are those that hit the biggest psychological buttons. The cars that we really wanted, but couldn't afford: the RS, the Gti, the Turbo, the Ghia, the Vanden-Plas; or the ones we actually had: the L, the Pop-Plus etc. What's popular and cheap (hence disposable) now, is what's going to whet people's appetites in the future. And the golden age is thirty years, so if you want to be keeping it ten years, buy something that's twenty years old now.

You would have to buy something you like , car bike or van It cost money to store a vehicle ,maintenance ect
You can't just park it on a drive and watch it make money

As already mentioned, just but something you like. With a 10-12k budget I'd be looking at a BMW 2OO2 or AlfaSud for example. I'd also look at a rare JDM model. But spending that type of money I'd want a perfect car with the right spec, colour etc. Good luck.

In the grand scheme of things you won't really make money anyway. You may think buying a car for say 50quid in 1997 and selling it for 10k in 2017 is a good return but do the maths.
20years and for sake of argument 10k profit. That's 500quid a year give or take and 50quid ish a month..
How much does a single garage cost to rent? Oh Yeh.. 50quid a month!
Now I know people have situations where they own space but even owning space costs and if you didn't have a car sitting in it you could put it to different profitable use. This is why I say you have to have somthing you want to own and essentially 'use' rather than somthing just for investment purposes. If you had driven your 50quid car for the past 20years you would have reason to be chuffed you had broken even.. Maybe..
