Decided when my 1993 Toyota Estima needed the rear exhaust section to save weight on a replacement and have a Remus twin side exit fitted. Seen them on motor sport cars and the hot rod fraternity but i hope that side exit to road side is legal as mot coming up. Fitted before thinking about legality. Any one know for sure ?

Read the MOT manual stickied on the board. It's fine from an MOT point of view.

Mine has one, currently not fitted, nor does the car run. Does that count? Exits just behind the passenger door. How do Mercedes get away with the side exit before the front door on the SLR?

Does it make a difference what side it's on from a legal point of view? I've seen side exit exhausts on various vans and can't remember which side they were on. Thinking the powers that be might object to it being on the pavement side, pumping fumes into babies faces, nuns kittens blah blah blah.

will need to exit after the last opening side window too i believe due to gases bla bla bla side exits for the win Nope, just has to be 'complete' i.e. Not have obvious parts missing, not have large leaks, be secured and not be so loud that the MOT tester takes umbrage with it. The whole 'exhaust gasses entering the passenger area' only applies to Class 5 vehicles, which is vehicles over 13 seats.

Thanks for some interesting comments / mot man doing the test runs a v8 Lincoln town car on straight pipes so might appreciate something a bit different / tad louder than normal

I run a side exit on my capri; a straight pipe with a cherry bomb in the middle. Mot often has an advisory for loud exhaust, but that's it.

Ran this for what must have been 4 years and many many thousands of miles... (Front bumper exit) No problems at MOT. Police stopped me once but were only curious how it even fit in the space and were impressed there was a silencer on it. Also ran this (thats just in front of the rear wheel) but haven't really done that many miles in it. Also made the tips removeable but haven't been asked to take them off as yet.

I ran a side exit on my Mira when I had it years ago, it popped out just where the rear passenger door was. It wasn't a full back box just a long pipe and a second silencer. The mot man rode rough shod over it though, didn't care to like it. It sounded great though, and went well with it on! One time a mate was asking me to rev the engine, not realising where the exhaust was and it blew up his trouser leg making him jump I'll have to see if I can find pics of it.
