I can't really compete here, suppose that's a good thing in a way.
I bought a 2008 fiesta ST when it was about 4 years old for a very fair price. They seemed to advertise it as a respectable car, quick, bible, sporty, sought after and I have never been so disappointed.
Slow, poor build quality, handled like curse word, it was just incredibly disappointing.
Fancy having a go at a 1*2 renaultsport, hope that's not as disapointing.

Rover 45 : Had one as a courtesy car when the Volvo daily was being repaired, had it for a couple of weeks. I didn't expect much, but I did expect a car that was built in this millennium not to feel inside like a car built in the mid 80's. It got me from A to B, but the quality of build etc. was bad, so cheap and horrible. I would also say that the 'reliability' of VWs old and newer is massively over stated, never had cars needing more work than the VWs I've owned (Beetle, Camper and Mk3 Golf)

Fiesta XR2i (1.8) Always wanted one but once I owned one quickly realised they where slow, didn't handle very well and I really never got on with the seating position. Sold it on and kept my Corsa GSi which was quicker and felt better built. Could say the same about an Escort RS Turbo (S2). My friend got one, I drove it and thought, hmmm, is that it, they where always talked up as being super quick when I was a lad. Would have either now though

Crazy fool lol! Mind you, my Skoda VRS is by far the most reliable and best daily I have ever had the pleasure of owning.

This. Had it for a few days to make a film. Fat, unreliable and vulgar. Glad to give it back.

Golf GTI MKII... They were supposed to be soooo good, my mate got one and let me have a drive, slow, handling was OK but not wonderful, interior looked good at first glance but soon appeared to be rather bland, at the time I had a volvo 480, the Volvo was 100% better in almost every aspect. And indeed I kicked his numerous times around the country lanes near home...

Vauxhall (Holden) Monaro Although the noise from the V8 is fantastic and the power/torque delivered from it is awesome (even though you can't use it anywhere!), the car is badly let down by the awful manual T56 gearbox. I didn't have great faith in the brakes either

I assume that whoever lends the motor expects it to be waxed lyrical about. So how do you say, "Actually, it's a dog." and still hope to get more in the future? I can see how the big boys get away with it, they're big, but what about you guys?

Current shape Fiesta. After hearing all the journos raving about them I was quite looking forward to nipping about in the latest holiday hire car. What did I find instead? The jerkiest most annoying car I've ever driven! Every single control was like an on/off switch. Virtually impossible to drive smoothly. Hateful thing. Personally I think this phenomena is all down to trying to make a dramatic impression on a test drive..... Applies brakes..... JERKS TO A HALT..... "oh the brakes are so good" Accelerates..... JERKS INTO MOTION..... "oh nippy little thing" Turd:

Handled nice, but the interior was awful, hugely unreliable, every time I worked on it I ended up injured, and most of all it just felt soulless. I genuinely believe that equivalent 80s Escorts are better designed and built!

Gotta step in and defend the Boxster S here. This is coming from someone who did the UK to southern Italy and back in one and it was nothing but a pleasure.
For me it was probably my Corrado 1.8 16v. A lovely car to look at and cruise in it just didn't have the get up and go to match the styling.

The Alfa 147 courtesy car I was given my the main stealer when my Multipla was in for repair.
Lucky me I thought as I was handed the keys to the little alfa, much better than a Stilo or Punto drudgery I normally got fobbed off with.
I'm sure it shares much of it's undepinnings with the aforementioned FIATs but it seemed totally undergeared on the A1 (I'm sure it was around 4k at 75mph!) - probably the reason it went through fuel on the way home.
They reckon everyone should drive an Alfa at sometime in your life - make sure it isn't a 147, I was pleased this Alfa experience lasted only 24 hours.

I imagine a manual would have been a bit more fun for smokey burnouts but it was still a woefully bland car to drive

For me it was a covin Porsche 911 Turbo, not any just one specific car. I was going to say Z3 2.8 or my old volvo s40 T4 which promised performance and handling but let me down, but the covin wins hands down. i had to go and pick it up for my dad, it had some body damage and he was in composites and got the gig. It looked fantastic, guards red, all the right badges in all the right places, interior was spot on, correct seats and gauges etc, it looked ,well, 'right' .Someone had spent a lot of cash getting the car this way. but when it came to the driving it all went wrong, it was beetle based as many are, still sporting the original beetle running gear except for one major alteration.Out went the flat 4 and in its place a hoofing great 3.0l essex v6. Whoever had installed this hadnt bothered with handling and braking, it was all still beetle 1200 stuff. It didnt stop, small discs, no servo and cut down pedals. Touch the brakes in a corner and the fronts locked up it didnt go, even with the v6 , the torque had overwhelmed the gearbox and you needed to double declutch it didnt steer, with the weight in the back it could understeer in a straight line under acceleration.accelerate in a corner and it would understeer wildly. for me it promised so much and disappointed so well
