As headline stats I'm looking to buy a newer car for daily and the one I've spotted is from private seller any good car checking websites you guys know.. already done the mot checker I'm looking to find out if outstanding finance and ever been a write off I know the log book will state this but it's a 3 hour drive away... cheers guys... only yea Ivery been on here for years but got new phone and couldn't remember my user name etc lol

HPI is the only one I would trust.
It's the most expensive but the most thorough IMO.

If it's old enough for an MOT you can do MOT history checks online. Advisory lists can help if you want to know what repairs might be coming up and it can also give you some idea how well the car has been looked after.

As I understand it, a company called Solera owns both Audatex, HPI and now (correct me if I'm wrong) CAP too so it's likely whoever you use will be going to the same database... Audatex do most of the insurer's database stuff on claims and repairs plus there's a whole heap available to the public. I presume they hold some elements of the check back to other agencies except the original and best HPI? Recurring niggles or advisory notes on MOTs are a good place to check too through the DVLA site, not so much for stolen/mileage/crashed stuff but to gauge how on top of things previous owners have been. Good luck though, it's a jungle out there buying semi-new cars... at least with old crappers you can safely assume it needs constant, recurring work that will never end  |

I used HPI for my modernish quite expensive car.
I don't know if they are better than others but its all about peace of mind.
They have a guarantee so that you get your money back if their info is flawed and you loose the car but the small print means it doesnt cover some transactions, for example mine cost too much to pay cash according to the rules so having paid cash there was no guarantee.
The check still gave good info though and there should be no reason to need the guarantee.

Get a good one, make sure they can check for log book loans. My builder lost his car and money because the text check he did, didn't.

I just text the reg to 83600 lol and check the past mot history if it's something mundane and not too expensive !
And before anyone says yes proper hpi checks are more thorough etc etc
But for £3 it does the job although obviously if it's a 10k + car or a rare thing then better off doing a proper check

HPI is best, like already said text checks don't check log book loans. HPI original and still the best.

What concerns me at the moment is this logbook loan lark and the car being repossessed or what not, especially when you see cars cheaper than they should be.
With these logbook loans, is the logbook taken by the loan company or does it remain in the possession of the vehicle owner?

The loan company takes the logbook, but the scammer takes the loan money, applies for a new logbook (£25) then sells the car. |

This ^ Very popular scam these days, was caught out myself recently (long story). I would be very wary of buying a 2nd hand car these days  |

Jez, that's something to think about. I mostly deal with lower end of the price range cars, my more expensive ones are kept more long term. Certainly something to think about next time!
