Sooooo, picked this little 1997 veedub Polo a few weeks back for scrap money. here is a photo!
Now although not quite retro yet, i think there is some potential here! what do you guys think? lows on on the cards as are wheels, but i have been told not too go mad... and as you probably have guessed I have a few things to fix first!
The Low down:
1.6 ltr Auto Transmition, 90k and a wee bit on the clock. power steering, eleccy front windows. MOT until end of July, oh and its silver!
The Good:
Interior is mint, though smells to much of taxi-style air-fresheners for my liking.
drives nicely, engine is nice and revvy, car has poke especially for an auto
everything is taught, although I don't buy into the 'German engineering' thing, this is a well made car
The Bad:
Hole in offside sill, about 3 by 1 inches so will need a patch welded there.
worn front bushes
laaaarge oil leak
bits of corrosion to odd things (power steering pump looks dubious but i have been informed is ok for a fair while) an front springs (not an issue if the lowering stick comes out!)
bald tyre.
few bits to be getting on with then!
Following taking the offsprings to a parent and toddler meeting (a trash a location other than your house meeting imo) I was out there with the cars (x1/9 tinkering was done first!).
I first hoped to fit the spare tyre, but no as its a space saver! i don't like these things... so that will appear on ebay later, and I will get two tyres from the scrappy for the polo. one for the car and one for in the boot!
with this done i set about the oil leak.. traced this fairly quickly to the rocker cover gasket. it wasnt hard to spot! had been a bit concerned it may have been head related but thankfully it appears not. whipped the cover off, at about half 5, rang the auto spares shop to pick a gasket up to discover they closed at 5! just shows that these places don't expect car tinkering of an evening anymore... and that I should get my parts in advance! so tomorrow will be fitting new gasket to the polo, and hopefully we will have a reliable runner. have a photo of the engine bay, sans the rocker cover, as I thought I had better look busy!
