Just need a bit of advice on a potential new daily. My diesel Bora, whilst comfortable and trusty, is getting long in the tooth and I am thinking about something more fun.
Rules are as follows: needs to be petrol, fun to drive, 3 or 5 door hatch (I do need room to carry stuff), reliable and a bit sporty. First thought was a Suzuki Swift Sport.
I don't want anything French (sorry Renault/Peugeot/Citroën fans) & the BMW Mini is a massive no. All suggestions respected and accepted.
What do you motoring wonders think?

Alfa 147 V6. *Mic drop* Although amazing. they are ALL THE MONIES! Suzuki swift is a good shout but be warned the standard tyre size is unobtanium. How new do you want to go. Fiesta ST? Focus ST? Vauxhall Corsa VXR if your that way inclined. Polo GTi 9n3 can come with a 1.8t so very very nippy. Volvo C30, 5 cylinder all the best noises. Mazda 3 MPS again all the power! Mazda 2 sport, nippy and great fun. Golf GTi since you like VW stuff, very much a hot hatch and very reasonable money for mk4/5 Audi s3 just a golf in a frock really. Seat leon FR again, golf based. Honda civic type r, EP3's are mega affordable. Yaris in t-sport flavour very revvy. If you wanna go older most options are french or VW

Depends on budget really, what about a Suzuki Ignis Sport?
What's wrong with the Bini Cooper S?
Mk5 Golf Gti is a superb all rounder (one of the few car's I regret selling)

Whats wrong with the bini?
All that bulbous bodywork makes the cabin tiny compared to the size of the car, there's no legroom in the front or back, the boot is tiny. Ride is hard and crashy. Oh and they're fugly. Stupid massive speedo in the middle of the dashboard that no-one ever looks at (I know it's a nod to the original mini). Switchgear on dash looks horrible. 1.6 petrol isn't fast or particularly economical.
On the plus side the headlight bulbs are very easy to change.
My mother in law has one and loves it, every one else in the family hates it.

Some excellent ideas here everyone - many thanks. The pokiness might be an issue as Mrs Bounce has just started learning to drive so a super-powerful car might not be the right thing for an inexperienced driver. As for the Bini I find them ugly, oversized for the space they offer and overpriced because "cool" people like them Plus I am not a fan of BMWs. Just a personal preference thing. Keep em coming!

Civic Type R or mk5 Golf GTI
Prices are rock bottom and they are solid cars. Had both myself, 300+ bhp is easily achieved in the Golf, it took a supercharger to get 300 bhp out of the Civic which wasnt cheap

Lupo sport for 1.4 100hp goodness, Lupo GTI for 1.6 125hp nonsense. Not very large cars but I had fun in the brief period I owned my Arosa Sport.
Ibiza Cupra/R Leon Cupra/R Like Golf GTIs but cheaper. Ibiza is Polo size/weight but Golf engine and power. Leon R is 225hp TT engine.
Any Civic Type R pre-EP3 inclusive
Toyota Glanza/Starlet
Nissan GTI-R

TBH anything sporty you buy is likely to be horendous to insure a new driver on. You don't seem to be hell bent on retro with the Suzuki as an option so I would scan the usual sites find something you fancy then do the boring bit by reading up reviews and importantly checking out the insurance grouping if you want to put SWMBO on. Insurers vary but i've found this useful when sorting out my kids cars www.parkers.co.uk/car-insurance/insurance-groups/ It might be cheaper to get her something small cheap to run insure and break of her own, then you can go wild!
