As some may have seen in readers rides, I'm putting a Mercedes engine into my scimitar. My plan is to have as little vibration as possible , so I have fitted transit mk3 mounts as I remember those old smiley vans were quite smooth, even though the 2.5 wobbled all over the place. They are the perfect size, but in the scimitar there will not be a lot of room for all that wobbling! I could go for harder mounts , but really don't want it to end up like my Landrover (with the same engine ) which is fine on the move, but vibrates everything on tickover. I'm thinking of possibly adding a mount at the top of the engine to act as a stabiliser, like a lot of fwd cars had, I'm sure I've seen rwd cars with this? What are your thoughts?

Sounds good. Try and rig something up that only comes into play at extremes of travel so the engine is normally only suspended by the soft mounts. Like bump stops for the engine.

Great! That's what I was thinking, something that doesn't really restrict idle movement, where the mainmounts take the vibration. Seeing as the supported weight is at the bottom, and stays there. The volvo 850 has the ( notoriously weak) top mount, but does similar to what I have in mind.

I'll get a pic up of the engine tomorrow so you can see how close the alternator is to the chassis. It's ok, but it could spell trouble.it that thing of I won't know til I try, but it's easier to design it out now rather that try to fix it once the body is back on 😀

Yeh we had some truck engines with them fitted & some of these even had like a built in shock absorber as the stabiliser. So instead of the traditional bar with rubber bushes at each end (which may work) the bar, if you like, was an actual shocker, quite stiff though.

That would be easy to rig up. You could use a motorcycle steering damper, or a washing machine damper, maybe even a bonnet strut.

Great idea! Thanks guys.....I've just thought, I've ordered a new belt damper as the bushes have gone at the ends, but I could re use it as a damper.......it could be just the job! I'll have a look and get some pics up. I've spent all day making mountings for the alternator and gearbox.......these things take so long!!
