maybe a bit of a mad question but hear me out... I Havent driven my car very recently and sods law as i embark on a 200 mile trip i found a big brass nut on the floor under my feet!! did the trip and it was fine but... where has it come from? I reached up the pedals hoping to find a thread it came off but, no luck. My clutch was making a intermittent clicking noise for a couple of month and thats now its suddenly stopped. With the noise you could feel the pedal "give a little" as you pressed it. I'm guessing this might have a lot to do with that?? My only concern is it going to make me break down or its from the brake pedal?

Does the black nylon bit look smooth or does it look like its had a thread through it ?
Its just from here looks like its intact and hence not been fitted to your car and may have come from else where . Either that or it was never done up enough to get into the nylon bit like it should have .

Only way to be sure is to have a look around under there. If you are fortunate you may find the same type of nut used on a component and you may even find one missing from a set. These things hold in all sorts of stuff from heater boxes to ECU's and the like. Nylocs are used so that they don't vibrate loose and if you've found a straggler it's most likely from something that has been off before and wasn't refitted correctly.
Isn't there a self adjusting ratchet on these clutch pedals? I'm probably thinking of an entirely different make as it was a while ago but they tend to click when they are a)worn or b)on maximum adjustment and can give no more.

Hi, Going by the size and type and the fact it's in a Ford, they are used to hold the steering column onto the support bracket and the bracket to the bulkhead and as said other sundry items up under the dash. As it looks like it's not been fitted I would think that when someone was fitting it they dropped it but it got caught up on the way down, rather than look for it they got a fresh one. It has now decided to come out of hiding. You should do a quick check to make sure but that's my guess.

At some point soon the dashboard will have to come out for welding so can check the steering then. It doesn't look like it's been on anything like you say but just worried it might be that valuable but that makes it all work.
Love the idea of putting it on eBay as rare! I can see it now! Maybe it could be the nut that pays for my welding!!! 😂

You need to check pal, have a touchy feel in the back of the clutch pedal and look for a load of plastic coggery. I don't know if mk3's have that set up. They're only plastic and wear in certain places and as it tries to adjust up, slips back a notch as you press the pedal but if it's on full adjustment then it'll click anyway because it can adjust no more... which means the clutch or the cable has seen better days. I've never owned a MK3 long enough to stick a clutch in one. S2 turbos... Weekly, usually Mondays.

That nut looks like it's never been fitted to anything, there's no marks on the nyloc insert, nor any witness marks on the mating face. As above, it's a spare one from the factory that you've just found.
