Never use copper slip on alloy to steel faces Have to ask, why not? And what to use instead? Ttfn Glenn Bi-metallic erosion, and the fact the two faces rely on friction to hold the wheel on. Copper slip lowers the level of friction and the wheel won't be held as tight Same reason for not copper slipping wheel bolts/studs and head bolts. It upsets the torque figures and will allow the fastenings to be over tightened before reaching the specified torque figure

you shouldn't use copper ease on the threads of any any safety critical fastener (ie suspension, steering) use it on the shank if you need to stop it seizing in a bush etc but keep it off the threads, bolts stay done up due to friction in the treads and grease also means you get more clamp load for the same given torque which can neck the bolts weakening them.

If you are using Lucas L488 indicators, and have chosen the flat, clear glass ones because they look best but need an orange bulb as an indicator, you will struggle to get the correct one - Halfords didn't even list one. If you are lucky enough like me to have a wife with a large collection of nail varnishes, OPI orange nail lacquer will make a white bulb glow orange, especially useful when you discover the bulbs you've bought don't fit late on a Sunday afternoon and your MOT is booked for Monday morning... Also works well on faded indicator and brake light lenses.

Just noticed this thread - impressive stuff Is it too late to nominate it for some RR-brownie points Always remove the filler plug from a gearbox before draining. You don't want a gearbox empty of fluid when you discover a seized/mashed up filler plug For older (60s/70s) cars, it's often easy to remove the gear lever from inside the car and refill the box from above (this also saves you getting overflowing EP80 in your ear ! ) Make sure the car is level when topping up the oil or you'll end up with the wrong amount of oil in it. If anyone has tips on how to remove the distinctive smell of gear oil - share the secret Retro tips : Hillman Hunter (and other Rootes? ) overdrive gearboxes use engine oil not your usual EP80/EP90 gearbox oil 90% of all overdrive faults are electrical, check your wiring before anything else To start a stubborn engine, remove the plugs - check you have a spark - heat the plugs using a gas grille or blowtorch before refitting - then try starting when the plugs are still hot. If no joy, pour a splash of petrol down the carb and try again.

If your RHD Beetle master cylinder needs a rebuild, but rebuild kits seem to be out of stock everywhere, buy a LHD master cylinder for £23 instead of a RHD one for £60. Pull all the guts out and you have your own rebuild kit. Cheaper than the £34 most places still list the rebuilt kit at too!

When you're changing the ignitor module of your Civic VTi due to a misfire, it's important to remember why Honda never filled the distributor of an 8,000rpm 1.6 litre masterpiece with brake cleaner.
Turns out, if you don't leave long enough for the brake cleaner to evaporate before starting it, you get an impromptu fireworks display, scare the sh#t out of your (military) mate and fire part of the dizzy cap into the garden wall.
Waste of a brand new dizzy cap, but b-ugger me was it hilarious. That's a lesson learned for sure.

"I promise not to mess up the expensive repro panes....that NEVER FIT" Not sure if I've already said this one: When fitting repair panels, trim the panel down as small as you can get away with, leaving as much original metal as possible. Firstly the original metal is usually better quality, and secondly when the repair panel rots out and needs doing again, you can just trim slightly higher, removing your previous weld line. If you've fitted the entire repair panel you can't do this!

When interupting any hydraulic brake system wedge the brake pedal with an appropriate impliment ( jack bar,lump of wood etc) this will close off the brake fluid reserve resulting in no loss of fluid... Never ever crimp flexis as you can turn the flexi into a check valve and burn up the caliper... I've used this one a few times recently, quite a good trick, and I'm a little surprised it's taken me 16 years in the trade to learn it.

I fold up some clingfilm and tighten the cap over it. Normally creates a vacuum lock itself and stops it leaking through.

Always put a barrier (preferably paint) between aluminium and steel panels or grease steel bolts going into aluminium to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Always keep a needle handy for removing splinters, and when you get to my age, a magnifying glass to see them. Mobile phone to take reference pictures, for when its time to reassemble. Also if you're working alone, to call for help if needed. Ttfn Glenn
