I dropped my S55 AMG off to the buyer, and bought this locally to him for the journey back home. Used it for a couple of weeks, but need to sell it now due to lack of space. I have used it to commute up and down to Manchester, and it was fine.
It takes a few turns of the glow plugs before it cranks up, but once running, it will drive faultlessly at 70+ MPH on the motorway all day long. Been told it is most likely air in the fuel lines / glow plugs causing this, but the car always starts up after a few cranks. Never cuts out, hesitates in power, etc.
'OM605' / 2.5 Litre / 5 Cylinder / 20 Valve / 150 BHP - 50+ MPG
The 'OM605' engine pulls well and has a decent amount of power. Turbo feels strong with no issues. Will possibly need a new viscous fan / thermostat, as the temperature rises if left standing idle for long periods. Once on the move or when you turn the heaters on, the temperature comes back down. Again, when the car is driving, this is not an issue and i've learnt to live with it. Either way, it will be a relatively cheap fix.
These engines are known to handle large horsepower, and are also for the 'Super Turbo Diesel' conversions (check on youtube).
Gearbox is fantastic with no stutters or hesitation, and gear changes are exactly as they should be with the typical smoothness.
Brakes are excellent, having recently had discs and pads.
Suspension is tight and solid, with no knocks or bangs.
All 4 tyres are matching Goodyear Efficient Grip with decent tread. OSR tyre has a slow puncture, and loses pressure after a few days.
This car is still an impressive package even by today's standards, delivering a smooth drive and genuine fuel economy of 50+ MPG.
Everything works as it should and there are currently no warning lights on the dash.
Bodywork needs some TLC. There are various rust patches, mainly the rear arches, front wing, and both passenger doors. Easiest way to spruce this up would be to buy the aforementioned panels on eBay and swap them over, as silver was a popular colour in this model. The boot area is clean, but there are the usual marks, blemishes and stone chips consistent with age and mileage. The Mercedes badge has been snapped off.
Interior is all in one piece, but would benefit from a shampoo if you are fussy. Seats adjust fine in all directions.
The W202 feels solid and well put-together, and you can compete a long journey easily in one of these.
Sold as Seen and as Spares or Repairs due to the listed faults, even though the car is perfectly useable once you get used to the issues.
