Peugeot 205 XS: how much to pay and what are they like?

As per title really. I have been offered a genuine 57k miles example, 4 owner car, MOT'ed, clean history etc and wondered what price I should be looking at for one? Also, what are they like to drive and live with as a daily? One step down from the GTI?

Funnily enough, I'm driving one tomorrow night for a Modern Classics mag feature. Tidy example, well-used but not abused, he's got it insured for a £3000 value.

As a daily, they're fine as long as you don't mind a basic, slightly tinny car. They handle great and should be loads of fun. I had a td and as long as you didn't want to spend long over 70mph it was awesome.

Price wise, are you buying or selling? If you're lucky you could possibly grab one for 500 if the seller just thinks it's an old car, if they know what 205 prices are doing I'd expect 1000+, if it's a dealer looking to cash in on rising values 2000+ (depending on how clean it is)

I doubt you'd lose money on an XS considering the price of GTis

XS isnt far off the 1.6 GTI performance, had one when I was 17, great fun.

Brilliant little cars. 1,4 with a twin choke, weren't they? Also used as the base for the Rallye IIRC. Not as fast or refined as a GTi, but they were never meant to be. Do lots of B-roads and city stuff? If so, it's utterly perfect. And at £850 I'd snap it up no matter what.

£850 is haggled already. Still seems a good deal though. And yes, this is the 85hp twin choke model

Hi mate as the other guys have said great cars easy to get parts for and easy to run I have one with 34,500 from new and a 309 xsi Aswell with 35,000 and I love the 2 of them and wouldn't be parting with them anytime soon. I also have have a 2 door xld model 309. The price seems not bad not unless you can find a better one for less money. Good luck with the car if you buy it.

If it was in decent nick, I would absolutely snap it up for the price, I wouldn't even haggle! I know someone who had both an XS and a 205 GTi and the main difference between the XS and the GTi aside from the engine is the bodyshell if I remember correctly. The XS uses a standard 205 shell, where the GTi has a wider track.

He reckoned in its own way, with its simplicity and lighter nose, the XS could be more fun at times.

Just buy it, I doubt you'd have much issue moving it on if you didn't like it.

1.9 gti wasn't any wider track at all, just wider wheels and the arches to cover them.

they certainly are a lot lighter, to the tune of about 820 vs circa 875 for a basic gti.


quite possible that they will increase in value if its a documented tidy example.

I can't say for sure, long time since I've even sat in one! Definitely wider wings on both GTI variants (1.6 and 1.9) to other 205s. The interwebs tell me there's a 20mm difference in front track.

I agree they can only go up in value, this ones a no-brainer.

I had a silver one around 2002. Was a great car and IMO drove better than my mates 1.6 gti.

I'd also say it's a bargain at that price.

they where always sought after, even when 2  3  years old . they run on fresh air , and stylish even to day

Apparently there's no service history or any paperwork besides v5 with it either, although to be honest not sure if this really matters as its an old boy ex-mechanic selling it who has been pretty meticulous and serviced it all himself. Still sound like a good deal?
