We've all probably got stuff lurking in the darkest recesses of the garage / attic / shed that is of uncertain provenance; vehicle components, tools, etc. Can anyone put a name to this? What is it? by Chris, on Flickr Double Anorak points if you can guesstimate which quarter of which Century it belongs to. Feel free to dump pics of your weird garage / attic / shed stuff here!

I'll guess Morse code sender, from the third quarter of the eighteenth century? If I was being shown this item for the first time I would also have guessed that it was an electrical telegraph transmitter key (morse key) - I'd have been mistaken too. Not close, no Cohiba sorry!

It's for putting the marks on leather, one tiny line at a time. That's why cloth seats became popular.
I would have thought ignition tester as well, but see no windy windy on it.

I neither know the correct german nor english term, but will try my luck with some kind of ignition box for dynamite from the middle of the 19th century. Again, I can understand why you'd make this guess but it is not a magneto blasting detonator.

I'm not sure if leather had been invented when this was a new item. It was never fitted with a windy handle. The use of leather dates back a long way (about 1300BC)! Unless you mean leather as we know it today which has been around since the early 1800's. Now, the comb (or finger) joint was introduced about 1700, and automated using woodworking machinery around 1900... History lesson over, and I have no idea what it is

is it a trembler ignition coil? early 20th century It seems we have a winner, it is indeed Ruhmkorff Coil a.k.a. Trembler Coil from the first part of the 20th Century. I'd hoped it might prove a stiffer challenge!

As above, model T trembler coil Maximum Anorak points as it is from the automotive icon that is the Ford Model T. Ford Model T. by Remo Varkevisser, on Flickr There was 1 trembler coil for each cylinder and the coils were used as an alternative to a Magneto to keep the production costs down, this technology was used during the 'T' production run 1908-1927.
