I know I know, we all hate 'Tell Me About' threads, but i've just been offered a mk1 golf for free and I wanted to know as much about them, mechanicals, bodywork, places to look for rot etc afore i decide wether its a good project. I'm not after a long term project over many months, so could do with knowing where they rot and wether or not its to far gone to fix and the like No pics as yet, but i have seen it at a glance and its white, don't know what engine or spec, i do know its been sat for a good 7 years and is covered in moss! Here's a pic i found on here to wet people appetites...

Mechanical arts are easy enough to get hold of, But body panels and trim are a real problem. Apparently i bought VWUK's last front panel a few years back and they were down to single figures for front wings too. You can get pattern versions of these but rear panels are/were obsolete. Check for rust everywhere, but pay close attention to the rear beam mounts and the number plate lights at the top of the rear panel.
Incidently, Anybody need a roll of Genuine VW headlining material for a MK1 GTI?

As said, mechanicals are similar to many VWs of the period and thus easy to source.
Speciality problems areas besides the usuals are the clutch cable losing it's grommet and damaging the bulkhead, the filler neck (which results in running problems if rotten), and the boot floor. The spare wheel well can be a problem too, sometimes towards the back edge.
I would snap it up if it's half decent, as they are really starting to get plastered with scene tax now. Certainly get it if it's a small bumper model like in the photo, as those bumpers alone will earn you gazillions on a VW forum.

Yup, its the same as the photo, least I think it is, Y-plate if I remember A Y-plater will probably be the later, large rear light model. It could be a late registered one though. I would snap it up if you've got the space. Failing that, take the good bits off, weigh it straight in, and get £50 for your troubles. ;D

just get one there aweosme, no looking back for me, forist and last car GTI's are more reliable, sayin that mu 1.3 has never let me down! a well maintained car will always never miss a beat! oil every 3.5k miles and no rev's above 3500 rpm untill oil at 70 and it will last forever!!!!! (on a 1.3 exessive oil pressure can cause the oil pump to snap off the side of the block, this is caused from cold oil = thick and hard to push = exissive pressure!!) all the parts r cheep! bodywork is the expensice stuff!! any more Q's pm me

Get some pics - always interested to see if a neglected Mk1 can be brought back to life. PS. Car pictured in your original post is a very early 'swallowtail' model... if it did happen to be like that then it's a rare item these days! Rear lights and panel would be as per the pic in my sig <-- Y-reg would be a much later model though, still could be worth fixing up however!

Pics as requested, there not very good or very clear mind, taken on me phone this morning, couldn't get close enough as i'm not into all that trespassing lark... Its been sat here for 7 odd years, you can see its part of the hedge and its very green and sorry for itself. Here's a closer shot, underneath the moss and algae it don't look too bad, but then,i've not had a closer look

That'll be either a 1300 or 1600 driver.
